My best Halo memory would be having BBQs and Halo LAN parties with co-workers on an almost monthly basis during the Halo CE and Halo 2 days. Playing LAN Halo with between 8-16 friends and co-workers, with good food and brews, from about 6PM to the wee hours of the morning on a Friday or Saturday night was good times.
The Halo 2 launch was epic as well. I was there the day the XBox launched and it wasn’t even a midnight launch and there was literally only like ten people in line to get an Xbox when EB Games opened. Halo just grew organically from there and became one of the hottest franchises at the time. I met my buddy at the same EB Games, about 15 minutes before the midnight launch of Halo 2. We were floored, as there was like 200 people in line, in front of us and by the time the store opened, there was another 50 people behind us. The energy with the crowd was electric and some guy in a Mustang was doing donuts in the mall parking lot. When the doors opened, we all cheered and all acted like a bunch of little kids on Christmas as we got our copies of Halo 2.
My worst Halo memory was the launch of Halo MCC. I belong to a gaming community called Gunslinger Gaming and the Halo wing of the community used to be vibrant and one of the largest portions of the community. We always do sign ups before games launch had like 100+ people signed for MCC. A bunch of us met online for the midnight launch of MCC and we had enough for several full teams of BTB. We were all uber-excited. Then after midnight we tried to get into matches and nothing. Everything would time out or just keep searching or the game would crash and kick us all out of matchmaking. We would try and try and try some more. Not one single match. After several hours, gave up and left disappointed. I played some Halo CE campaign and even that was a little buggy, but at least playable. At about 4AM I tried again and finally got into one BTB match solo, on one of the PC specific maps from CE, but of course the teams were uneven. We tried several other get togethers over the next two weeks and it always ended in failure or a frustrating buggy mess when we did get in a rare match. About two months after launch, after an update, we finally were able to consistently find matches as a team, but by that time, 343 had done their handy work and there was only a few of us left from my clan that still wanted to play Halo. I still can’t believe Microsoft didn’t clean house then at 343. Halo MCC could have been a game changer for the XB1. I feel 343 cost Microsoft millions upon millions of dollars of future lost revenue with the disastrous launch of Halo MCC.
Just so I don’t end on a sour note, Halo MCC is pretty rockin’ now, is expanding to PC and Reach should be hitting shortly! I’m also hopeful for Halo Infinite! I’m hyped!
