i'm really ashamed as a canadian to learn this. especially when a canadian passport gets you into some many countries easily. i feel countries would retaliate eventually, like colombia did (i had to pay $160 to get in after arriving at the airport)

I think the situation got a little better though. IIRC 2013 had so many changes with the Express Entry system taking place and so on, that it could be one of the reasons for such stupid delays / refusals.

Yup. Last year I was having trouble falling asleep at night, so this year I broke down and got an AC unit for my bedroom. Even 20 minutes of AC right before I try to fall asleep makes a big difference.

Although when you come in from the heat, the "artificial cold" of wind from a big fan actually seems to be more effective and more comfortable and cheaper than a blast of cold from the AC.

If anyone wants, the Rona on Kingsway (by Knight Street and/or King Edward) is closing down forever (apparently a 50+ year old hardware store with a giant parking lot in the heart of the city is not an optimal use of real estate, who knew?), so the entire store is on clearance sale. Fans and air conditioners are 40% off.

I'm in San Francisco right now and it has been 15 - 20 the entire time. I picked the perfect time to be out of the country! That Rona is super close to me though so I should check it out.

I remember when it was Revy, but I guess the Lumberland pre-dates it.

There's some talk about selling Kingsgate Mall too, which sits on about $80M worth of land. It's owned by the VSB.

As I understand it, it's owned by the VSB (it was a former school), but it's rented/leased by the developer that built the mall in the 70's. The developer is 45 years into a 100 year rental contract.

It's currently a profitable arrangement for both the VSB and the developer (and the weird little stores). But it could be more profitable if it was developed again into something bigger and newer. But neither side wants to pay for the development. The developer doesn't want to dump a bunch of money into the site only to have the VSB increase their rent and end up owning the whole thing in 55 years, so the developer wants to split the costs with the VSB and find some sort of win-win balance (increased profits for the developer and increased rent for the VSB, and likely also a contract extension), but the VSB doesn't have room in the school budget to join in on massively profitable investments.

The VSB could take the easy way out and sell because the land is valuable, but the developer still has a 55 year rental contract, and they could force the site to stay underdeveloped for the next 55 years out of spite, which makes the property undesirable to new owners (since most of them would want to develop right away, and the property value is based on the idea of development being possible). Unless VSB sold to the current tenants. They'd be willing to buy, obviously at a reduced rate since they're the only ones making an offer. Selling is a bad deal for the VSB, but you need money to make money, and the school board currently can't even afford to make money.

I'm moving to SF in less then 2 weeks for at least over a year. After that, it's one of 4 cities:

1) Tokyo
2) London
3) Moving back to Vancouver
4) Staying in San Francisco

Anyways, in the meantime, what should I buy here to take down with me? I was thinking of some things from T&T Supermarket that they may not have down there in their chinatown. Not sure what else are Vancouver-specific things to pick up.

I'm going to miss Vancouver :O

So now news report that sales of houses are down and all that. Home builders are bracing for 5000 jobs layoff. Vancouver real estate is such a delicate situation to handle. You want to cool off the speculation price rise but risk losing alot of the direct and indirect jobs that benefit from construction. Curious where this will go from here. I looked at the MLS listing of some places around me and they have only gone up since I bought my place.

The people selling aren't in a hurry and won't budge on their price.

The foreign buyers are looking for loopholes.

Just got back from 3 weeks in Europe and as much as I love travelling I would never want to live anywhere but here. Love Vancouver.

Now just gotta afford rent.

Just got back from a week at my girlfriend's place in Wollongong, Australia.

Absolutely beautiful place, but I guess I'm biased since she lives there. I wish she enjoyed chilly places like Vancouver, it would be such an amazing dream to have her close by.

And after a few days in Sydney as well, as much as that city is all sorts of awesome, Vancouver is really an one of a kind place.

Dublin will always be home for me, but Vancouver is one of a kind, I've never lived anywhere else like it

vancouver is still my fave, but i can't quite explain why....

it's the place i was born in and i'm very comfortable with it.
it's always regarded highly in global surveys
the streets are clean and nature is so close by
it's very international and cosmopolitan

but... is there culture? vancouver, and canada in general doesn't have a whole lotta history.
i've never really went out partying in vancouver, as i started doing that once i moved out
and where would you take visitors? how many days would you recommend people spend in the city??

I know all you can eat sushi isn't where one goes to get great sushi but man, sometimes I just want a huge variety of shit.

Where's a good place to go? Preferably on the north of the Fraser. I don't mind heading into the city a bit but fuck going to Richmond or Surrey.

Hell where is a good sushi place period? I liked the place we had out here in the Tricities but they packed up shop and the half dozen I've tried around here have all been mediocre as hell.
