I'm dumbfounded that anone would portray Vancouver as hipster dominated.. They're so few in number, I'm surprised when I see them.

If you said "rich Asians" or "commercial drive hippies" I'd understand.. But hipsters? Naw.

They pretty much saturate downtown. Especially near the art gallery and library. Blech.

If anyone happens to like Stargate, The Bridge studios is having a garage sale of 14 years worth of accumulated junk that was used to make the show. Obviously all the good stuff was sold on ebay a long time ago, but there's still some neat things kicking around. Like sets of "villager clothes" or an empty three ring binder that was once labelled "Atlantis season 3".

A bunch of stuff that may be of interest to non-nerds as well, like used filing cabinets and bookshelves.

I was there earlier today, and it's open again tomorrow (Saturday) from 10:00 until 6:00.

Shit, do I go to the naked bike ride or the Stargate thing? Gah.
Naked bike ride to the sale. Only weaklings need a crowd to hide their shame.

Ride home from the sale carrying a filing cabinet. Only weaklings need a pickup truck.

One of my profs last fall was an actor on Stargate. He was awesome. It as a Greek Mythology class I was taking to fill my B-Hum requirement and he was just an amazing story-teller. When we found out he was an actor it kinda made sense =P

If you're at SFU and need a B-Hum, take HUM 102 with William Dow.

You crazy.

Hipsters are all over Main St (from about King Edward to a few blocks north of Broadway), but downtown it's (still) yuppie central.

Yaletown and Coal Harbour are, for sure. The West End still has a nice mix of different people, and the fact that it feels a lot more like a neighbourhood is nice (I've always found Yaletown and Coal Harbour to feel quite sterile (too much cement, not enough green), and many of their inhabitants come off as cold). Tons of hipsters in that Main St. corridor you mentioned though.

http://www.vancitybuzz.com/2010/06/bixi-vancouver-program-in-2011/

Vancouver’s bicycle revolution continues as it was announced yesterday that the City of Vancouver will finally get it’s very own Bixi (bicycle + taxi = bixi) system. The Bixi system, modeled after the awesome program in Montreal, is a city-wide public bike-sharing program, which allows a person to pick up a bike at any one of the stations around the city, ride around and drop them off at another station when they are done. To be part of the program requires a $78 fee, plus fees for trips lasting more than a half hour. The program will be available all over the city with around 200 stations planned in the following nieghbourhoods: Mt. Pleasant, Kits, Fairview, UBC, Commercial Drive and downtown.

The announcement really should not come as a surprise to Vancouverites. The mayor is definitely making good on his promise to make Vancouver more bicycle friendly (see Dunsmuir viaduct and bike lane). Whether or not we get more people on bicycles remains to be seen and ultimately increased ridership may take a few years.
The estimated cost to set up a Bixi system is $15 million and once fully under way should be self financing. Furthermore, the city is looking at the option of corporate sponsors, and maybe even the much dreaded P3 (private-public partnerships) that have become popular in infrastructure projects, thanks to the provincial Liberals.
Let’s see how this revolution pans out. I think the Bixi program was long overdue and for a city such as Vancouver, which prides itself in being “green” I am surprised we didn’t have this in place sooner.
Image at the link. This is AWESOME! Was in Montreal about a month ago and how was really blown away by it. A year's pass is $78. You just grab a bike at the nearest station, bike to the station closes to where you're headed and park it there.

The issue of course is our helmet law but I don't think I've ever seen that enforced.

They enforce it sometimes. I've had friends get hassled/ticketed over it.

Anyways, I'm glad we're getting the Bixi system, and in my neighbourhood (Mt. Pleasant) too. I remember reading about Paris' version of this system and thinking that it was a fantastic idea.

The city wants to have a Bixi program run privately.

While I hear this works in some other cities, Vancouver had the Olympics Athlete's Village developed privately and ultimately was on the hook for all of it anyways... I just don't have much faith in the city to do a private-public partnership in a way that isn't just robbing public funds.

I'm going to a concert at the Rickshaw Theatre tonight. I haven't lived here that long but it's right by Main and Hastings which I thought was supposed to be a pretty rough part of town. Is there a safe way for me to get there from the downtown on foot?

Man up. I used to take a kung fu class down there at 10PM lol. They're mostly harmless.

The danger is overstated. As long as you don't bug anyone, they won't bug you. For one of my video courses we did our showing at the District 319 theatre which is also located there. I just got off the bus, walked in and left the same way. No danger.

Visiting until Friday. Don't really know what I'll have time to see. I'll be at EA most of the time, pretty sure.

Tomorrow I should know what kind of free time I will have!

Really want to see the riot "monuments" and poster boards. Don't know why.

Anyone know if those are still up?

I'm landing in Vancouver at 11:30pm Pacific on Thursday :D So excited.

And yeah, the air in Waterloo today is ugh. Still better than that freak day a month or so ago though.

I will be wearing my Jays hat and doing good deeds so that Vancouverites learn that us Torontonians aren't all bad people. ;]

Awesome thread, I will be visiting Canada this summer and will also visit for Vancouver for 2 or 3 days. I will be visiting Stanley Park for sure, and also the Metrapolis and Robson Street.
Is there anything you guys would really recommend me to go see in the city? Like awesome buildings, activities and so. I am really looking forward to this awesome city!

What!? Vancouver is only 125 years old? :O do you guys have like... any history at all?

Damn... The city where I'm from was founded in the prehistory... (Wikipedia says so, too)

Most of the boards at the Bay have been replaced. Sears still has their boards up (go down Howe and Robson). Chapters has boards too.

So some poll says Vancouver is the nicest (aesthetically) city in Canada. It's certainly the nicest Canadian city I've been to.

If you want a good laugh/cry, scroll down to the comments, where too many people read the headline, assumed it was about Vancouverites being friendly, and decided they absolutely needed to comment on a short article they haven't read. Someone needs to develop a Chrome extension that keeps CTV news comments from loading.
Could just be an effective way of identifying the nation's least intelligent.

Fireworks, probably. Haven't checked for sure. Should be viewable from Canada Place.

And Granville Island hosts free jazz events as part of the Vancouver jazz festival.

There's a flag thingy at the bus stop out the front of London Drugs on Granville. But it's pretty lame.

The boards on windowshops are inspirational to read, but that's about it.

Just because I'm brown doesn't mean I'm from Surrey. Racist.

(I live in Vancouver. Doing co-op in Waterloo. Visiting home for a week)

Just wanted to say, that for the very brief time I had to experience Vancouver, I loved it. The people were friendly, courteous, and what I expected from Canadians -- as a fellow Canadian. I think I've made up my mind that I'd love to live and work here as opposed to Toronto.

Again, as a fellow Canadian, I'm lucky and happy to have spent a Canada day split between Vancouver and my home, Toronto.

HAPPY CANADA DAY!
