Starfield releases September 6, 2023

>I play games, not sales
The most powerful console in history still cannot offer a game that will reveal its full technical potential

What’s that got to do with whether or not a game is good?

Nightmare, agreed, here's the thing though, purely from a discussion point of view, this game is a lose-lose situation, if it proves to be good with no major bugs, the usual Xbox fanboys suspects will be "See ? the power of Xbox" / " Starfield the saviour of 2023®" / "GOTY ! "/ "Papa-Phil & Gamepass are the best thing since sliced bread" / "Gamepass is the best deal in gaming" while the "other" side will be "LOL another Bugthesda junk-fest" / "You had way too high expectations LOL" etc etc...

Again, it's a lose-lose situation where IMO, no real discussion can be had about it.
Truth be told, you know for a fact that even if it proves to be mediocre/enjoyable at the very least, it will still be heralded as amazing by the Xbox boys and blame everything on the "haters" with the Sony boys jumping from joy because of it.

It's just the nature of the forums brother, people have to fight over something I presume...

Cheers

More likely than not, most of the discussion around the game will be on playthroughs, mods, activities etc.

Even the YouTube comments for this video are quite civil, and people are excited.

IRL, Console warriors are a fringe portion of gamers.

I HATE when some YouTubers put their goofy reaction face in their thumbnail…..

So is it actually gonna have that shitty framerate that they've shown on gameplay previews? I mean, they can't possibly think of releasing the game that's gonna be running this badly, can't they...?

Nice to have a date.
This game has major potential because its something different from Bethesda. Not just a retread of an established franchise.
The realistic NASA spin is unique and not just full on hyper colorful alien video-gamey stuff weve seen a million times.
Im intrigued by the 2001 Space Odyssey/Event Horizon mystery type stuff theyve been hinting at - im guessing thats the backbone of the plot throughout the planets.

Im not the biggest Bethesda fan but their games are worth checking out for the sheer scope of it all - this looks to take that to whole other levels.

By ‘gameplay previews’, you mean the footage that’d be over a year old on release?

Wait until the Direct

I think it will be a mostly stable 30fps on xbox, i dont think you should expect 60 though, unless it comes with an optional 1080p-1440p performance mode. I really wish more console devs would utilize FSR. Cyberpunk patched it in to great effect on consoles. A cleaner image and better performance all around

I'm so glad to see them trying something new outside the ES timeline (which I've never had much interest in personally). A lot of interesting avenues for quests with this setting.

First bethesda release?
The games being full of bugs is one thing but putting the game on display when it's running this poorly in this day and age when everyone is huffing on Digital Foundy's farts and review bomb every game that can't maintain steady 200 FPS on a mediocre and poorly optimized PC, it's like they're just begging to be laughed out of the scene.

But I guess you're right. It's Bethesda. They don't give a fuck, and people are gonna give them a pass anyway...

...GAME PASS THAT IS!

You have inside information about how Starfield runs now?
Or this is just forum BS?

It will just be weird to not have any 60fps mode, for this kind of big game... We got maybe 95% of games this gen have some kind of 60fps mode on consoles.

I mean it's true though. And I used Horizon, not Forspoken. The Horizon games still went on to do very well in sales, they just got outshined near launch because of massive releases (BoTW; Elden Ring). Hogwarts really kinda snuffed out Forspoken and I don't see Forspoken having the legs of the Horizon games (not to mention it isn't at their quality scale, though it seems better than the memes make it out to be from those who've actually played it). Starfield would be in a similar position if it came out too close to Spiderman 2 so it benefits them to not release too closely.

And it seems like they've got a good window that's competition-free. Should give the game enough breathing room.

It's not possible to do this to a great Spiderman game.

Make it so the next Elder Scolls is actually one of the planets you visit and im sold.
I would LOVE to see that kind of integration in gaming. Where you could be playing Elder Scrolls and then someone from Starfield visits you from their game. Or someone in Rainbow Six joins a terrorist hunt with a Ghost Recon team. Different games playing, but can enter each world in one way or another.

Very excited for this but I can't help but feel that's way too soon of a release date. I know it's going to be a bug fest irregardless of release date considering it's Bethesda, but the scope and size of it all makes me worried that the extra required layer of polish is not going to be there on day 1. Or even week or month 1.

It's going to be the first big Bethesda game after the acquisition, right? I hope that it's not getting the Halo Infinite "We'll iron it out in the years to come" treatment.

They delayed it a year. It's pretty much known, it's gonna have some bugs.

Kind of a red herring, no?

It'll have bugs, we all know that. I'll enjoy(as will most) assuming it doesn't go full retard.
I'll probably enjoy it too, but I'm a patient man and wouldn't mind waiting a whole extra year if that means getting another cultural pnenomenom like Skyrim.

And for what this game is meant to be, I'm somewhat concerned, not only about the lack of gameplay in general, but the fact that a lot of it looks similar. Even for a game that is still 6 months away imo.

That's fair enough. I'll enjoy it by simply being able to immerse myself and explore. Well, hopefully. If immersion and exploration are bad, I'll have no other choice than to judge the shitty(probably) combat.

Still praying this has aliens
Same.

But for once I wish a game would introduce them with a realistic depiction in regards to what kind of psychological, cultural, religious etc. Implications this would have on humans and our place in the universe.

The way the dyson sphere thing got showcased at the end of the trailer sparks some hope though. I just don't want another game where aliens are just reskinned humans with a slightly different/more advanced arsenal of weapons. I want that Arrival type shit.

Oh I agree I don't want it like Mass Effect or anything like that. I'd like it presented in the same way discovering intelligent life outside Earth in real life would be and, as you said, the implications of all that. Not dancing in a disco with 4 eyed Jabba.

Every publisher these days loves to lie to their fans about release dates. Its a sneaky way to get pre order money
The reality here is that work from home has completely fucked scheduling in game development. It isn't just that these things take longer now but that no one has a great grip on just how much longer they take. Everyone is just guessing.

I can see how the gameplay looks dated, but its really about personalizing your spaceship inside and out and going out to explore. Hopefully with more fun things to do than No Man's Sky.

Weird comment to make after MS signed off on it getting delayed for additional polishing.

Bro stop getting so defensive all the time. Or at the very least learn how to properly interpret other people's words because not every bit of criticism is meant in bad faith.

Me too, will be a huge missed opportunity if they craft such a huge universe and only populate it with humans and robots.
There is monster aliens at least but intelligent aliens would be neat of course, a new type of Liara and some translator tech to understand the language.
If nothing else I hope modders manage to swap out the droid companion to something more interesting.
