Had to watch some Maximilian and Bawkbasoup to see others that matched my enthusiasm after all the Debbie Downers in here. I know, I know, they screwed up the console version and it can't be helped but damn.

Btw, first mod is going to be unbreakable knife. The parry and knife slashing/stabbing are way too fun to be limited.
That would make the game much easier tho.

Maybe for a second run...

Going to try the demo tonight but the first impressions I'm reading here are not super exciting :messenger_mr_smith_who_are_you_going_to_call::pie_grinning_sweat:
Personally I've been noticing from trailers that graphics wise certain things were not as good as they could be, blacks are crashed, the rain looked awful and distracting, too much use of bloom and shiny effects and certain things like the fog on the floor of the castle were just stupid, why should there be fog on a floor, it's a disco?:messenger_tears_of_joy:

Fingers crossed for the final game since I got this already digitally preordered.

The bear of bad news
Capcom, RE4 was my favourite game ever.

What is this crud? How could you do this to me?

FYI, RE4 on Wii is $3 on the Wii U eshop right now, before they shut down the store.

Going to be a 3 way debate forever on what the best version is:
  • RE4 Wii
  • RE4 Quest 2
  • RE4 Remake (PC)

So played on Steam Deck, PC (GTX 1060gb 6gb) and PS5, gotta say, it plays nice on Steam Deck, surprisingly so, but I may have to go for the better looking PS5 version, a couple of things I thought of playing

  • I like the new more serious atmosphere, though RE is camp, the REmakes go for a more serious mood, it helps a lot compared to the Original
  • The Controls are nice and tight, very similar to the other REmakes now, moving and shooting against these Ganadoes now feels a lot better
  • The Enemies are super aggressive, I actually got surprised and died here, the amount of times I've played RE4 makes me know this section like the back of my hand
  • is the Knife really durable? Odd choice imo, I'm not sure on it

I really liked it. Mostly because it feels like a new game, and also there is still that bit of nostalgia from the original.

Playing it on PC with the Dualsense and gyro aim from steam. Really amazing.

Some things I was able to do in RE4 wasn’t possible in here.

AI is a lot more aggressive than even Professional mode on the OG.

That's a lot of required VRAM for a cross-gen game.

It doesn't require this amount of Vram at all. RE engine games have setting to ALLOCATE Vram amount but for RE8 for example game only needed 1GB of Vram in this setting for highest res textures (and this game had amazing textures). But people will set everything to max and now game allocates 12GB and kills low Vram cards while it will still look the same no matter what Vram allocation you set.

"Set everything to ultra" mentality of PCMR.

The Not so Good
I agree with almost everything you said. I have this theory that RE4 was in a unique position where games from that era, no matter how polished, still gave the player plenty of leeway to use any technical shortcomings to their advantage in a fun way. The door thing you mentioned for example. In the original it looked so goofy, it was almost like an unintended yet lucky accident. But it was one of many things that made the gameplay so incredibly fun. It felt like there were tons and tons of ways to fight through every encounter whether it was a respectable course of action or not. Something completely absent from most games today since developpers are far too obsessed with things being realistically sound instead of being fun.

Halo 2 always being my go-to example for this. Game wouldn't have been half the success that it was if it didn't have janky pshysics, button combo's, a lack of death barriers etc.

Anyway, In the first 10 minutes of the demo alone I felt very constrained. Sections being cut-off from backtracking, a scarce amount of collectibles, enemies feeling very scripted in terms of combat and animations. The fucking dog is dead?? And I mentioned this in a previous post but the game won't allow you to go to the upper floor of the clock tower anymore. That was one of my favorite cheese spots in new game+

Game looks good though, I'll give it that.

Edit: Oh, and your knife being able to break now. What on earth.

Played it on PC. 1080p, high settings with RT and FSR 2.0 on. Runs 93-95fps on average. Played with mouse and keyboard, feels much better compared to controller.

Briefly played the demo, couldn't even complete it, since it was late.

But early impressions is that it looks really good and the tone seems more darker than original RE4 Remake.

I only did the house section, so I haven't really tackle the combat yet.

I tried it on pc and can't believe that they made it feel better on mouse and keyboard than on a controller... How is that possible for Capcom is beyond me.

Remake of a legendary RE4 with terrible aiming and camera control on a gamepad. Like they didn't have a singe test play session...

Played the demo, really enjoyed myself a lot.

Came into this thread, expecting people to have enjoyed it too.

But I see lots of complaints about visuals what I personally thought were great (playing performance mode on SX)

I like the new parry mechanic, that being said I notice my uploaded video is quite a bit darker than it actually is on my TV.

Deleted the demo and looking forward to the full release now :)

Game seems to run slight better in the same modes on PS5 than on Xbox series x:

But on reality it plays like shit (with rt off!) on both in resolution mode lol

How? Why ?
It's not like the game is a looker, it's pretty much inexcusable IMO.
I REALLY hope that this is based on a previous build...

PS : I don't care about DF comparisons/analysis' etc usually but I'm interested in hearing what the heck is going on with the console versions with this specific game now, this is supposed to be their golden goose but instead it turned into "look at how they massacred my boy.gif"

Man, I really wasn't expecting that from Capcom.

In performance mode it drops frames too (probably more on Xbox?) but it's much more stable than in resolution. But with 60Hz display everyone will still see stuttering (depending on how sensitive person is), VRR saves this game but developers shouldn't rely on this...

Seems like XSX is tad sharper, or maybe it is just a focus of the camera on cell phone. This is nice overlay, btw.

Just played through it on PS5, plays like a dream, capcom know their 3rd person games.
Seems sharp and responsive and the haptics really add that punch and immersion really feels fantastic to play.

I played on the RT performance mode and whilst its a little soft, im talking very little, it looks brilliant.
Had someone watch me on screenshare and yeah the textures atmosphere effects and everything look excellent so maybe its like Horizon where its effecting some people and not others (playin on an OLED).

About to try it on my PC rig to see what its like.

Cant believe I actually trusted that capcom would give this game the treatment it deserved. Resident evil village. 2 and 3 remake run and look amazing to me so I trusted them to give this the care it deserved. Lots of issues with games this gen. I'll fire it up in a min and give it a go myself.

I thought this was using RE engine?

Hope its just the demo I suppose

Yep, looks like the XSX version is indeed sharper but it drops a couple of frames more, pretty much the usual differences between the PS5 and XSX if I'm not mistaken (correct me if I'm wrong).

Either way, it's a lose-lose situation since both the IQ and performance are...not good (not gonna say "bad" 'cause I'll get jumped 😉).

Yeah, maybe resolution is indeed higher on Series X. DF/VG/NX will have to enlighten us with information.

After trying all 3 version i would say PS5 version is the way to go and that's based solely on Dual Sense implementation - it's quite great. PC version supports DS but without trigger and haptics feedback so it's not great.

Other than that congrats Capcom for a lot of options in PC version (and they can change performance a lot), i didn't saw any stutter either. Of course for AMD sponsored game DLSS is out of the question...

I go to the village and get my ass handed to me by like 5 maniacs at once lunging at me and one jackass throwing a goddamn axe at my face. This is 2023 for christs sake. Games are supposed to be easier now! It was ok though still getting it day one. Should be some difficulty options to maybe take it down to 3 maniacs at once with no axe throwing. Or maybe more bullets because my aim is trash especially when I'm scared for my life and missing everything. Shrug.

I didn't have an issue with the graphics. They don't seem phenomenal or anything but still fine imo. The lines were delivered like they were just taken straight out of whatever early 2000's year this game came from though. Flat and bad acting. Crazy villager number 3 delivered the best performance with the "UNGHHH AAAH" line I thought. Everybody else just kinda phoned it in.

Cranked all settings to max @ 1440p and was hitting over 90fps on my 3080 despite the game telling me I didn’t have enough VRAM. Game hard crashed on me so that could be something to do with the VRAM, although I’m not sure. I thought the game would just stutter and drop a ton of frames.

Game seems good but after playing the demo, I’m gonna wait for it to drop in price. I’m not in a rush to play it.

I think it looks great on PC though!

I mean yeah great demo, but i won't praise the game yet, they release RE3 demo that was best part of the game, and once the game is out it was finished in one Afternoon. Still not preordering, i'll wait for release and see what reviews and people say about game's lenghts, you ain't fool me twice Crapcom

Until DF and NXG come out with their analyses this will have to do (?) :

Taken from the video description :
PS4: 900p/~45fps
PS4 Pro: Resolution Mode: 2160p/~30fps Performance Mode: Dynamic 1080p/~60fps
PS5: Resolution Mode: 2160p/~60fps Performance Mode: Dynamic 2160p/60fps.

All versions use the same temporal reconstruction technique for resolution that we saw in RE Village. PS5 runs at an average of 1872p in performance mode. - The PS5 version has an advantage in almost all graphical settings. Animations, textures, LOD, lighting, shadows, post-processing effects... Although the oldgen version maintains an acceptable visual quality. - PS5 Resolution mode activates Ray-Tracing by default, but we can enable/disable it even if we choose Resolution or Performance mode. - Ray-Tracing improves the overall lighting of specific areas and reflections as we saw in Resident Evil Village. Its use is quite anecdotal. - On PS5 it is possible to activate a graphics option that improves the physics of Leon's hair and other characters/animals. However, this option causes integration problems with the lighting in certain areas. I recommend not activating this enhancement for now. - PS4/PS4 Pro remove the shadow casting of some elements and light points (especially indoor lamps). - The oldgen versions present some problems in texture loading. - Loading times are 5 times faster on PS5. - General audio uses quite aggressive compression on PS4/PS4 Pro. - The PS5 version supports VRR, although it does not exceed 60fps in any mode.

Yes, the crash is VRAM related. Keep the VRAM usage on Orange. If its Red, the game will crash. I could only finish the demo when I changed the VRAM to orange, otherwise it would crash at some point.

Edit: I have a 4070Ti

Looks amazing on my pc. 4k at 120 hz, everything maxed with rt, and no noticeable dips! How are the console versions fairing? I thought re2 and 3 looked really nice on series x.

My toughts

- Darker and creepier.
- Level design is much more narrow than the original
- Gunplay seems to be a bit slower paced
- Knife mechanics are interesting trade offs for the experience above.
- Cutscenes aren't well directed, they really look lower budget compared to the original.

I also had the RT on crashses even if the memory usage was below the limit, I also felt that the FSR 2 especially on vegetation at distance was somewhat agressive in artifacts despite being on quality mode. I've read reports that the PS5 version had lower res but better frame rate while XSX had better res but lower framerate, also big deadzone with controller.

Overall its a good game, but didn't feel that 2007 experience I had when i've fist played on PS2, that was a game changing moment at the first minute.

The image quality is terrible on ps5 in performance mode! I'm seriously disappointed here. Wtf happened Capcom? Re8 has MUCH HIGHER resolution at 60 fps and a similar level of fidelity!

I swear it's one gut punch after another as a next gen console owner as more and more games come out with disappointing resolution and image quality, despite us being 2.5 years into the generation and with these games not even being THAT impressive in terms of what they're trying to achieve! Just today DF did an analysis of Wu Long Fallen Dynasty- 1260p/60 fps lol! Last month we had Forsaken as a "next gen" only title and Dead Space Remake, both topping out at what? 1440p?

At least they were a little sharper than RE4 which looks to be 1080p! Then in October of last year we had the Gotham Knights debacle of 30fps as well as Evil West (1080p/60). I'm fully convinced things are not going to get much better this generation with these consoles as I've played everything worth playing and everything has shown limitations in one form or another. These consoles are not that powerful and developers today are not putting in the same kind of effort they used to.

Thats a bad combination in terms of what to expect graphically going forward, and as games become more demanding its only going to get worse. People are saying RE4 Remake is not impressive graphically but that's probably NOT the case. There probably are some real improvements to the graphics and that's the reason we're getting a lower resolution than re8.
Yeah I'm not sure what the issue is this gen, like are developers ambitions outpacing the capabilities of the consoles faster then before? Just strange to me that some recent console games have been so messy

Gamepads 4 Life
PS5 version feels like absolute shit to play but I thought it looked and sounded great, with strong DualSense/3D audio implementation. But my experience with the PC version showed me just how revolutionary Steam Input is.

PC version looks god-tier and after dialing gyro + flick stick that is the version I will play with, easy choice. There is no simply no overstating how revolutionary of a control method that is, it just takes some time to learn how to set it up. It is the perfect middle ground between precision and immersion. Doubt I will ever play a shooter on console again until that is standardized, the gyro aim on PS5 had my hype completely deflated and playing on PC just feels amazing. It's a complete night-and-day difference or me.
PS5 version don't have gyro???

Don’t they use checkerboard 4k ?

1800p checkerboard is basically what the horizon performance mode Wars at launch and it took GG 3 months to fix it. They kept the resolution the same but had to feed the game a lot more of the previous data to get rid of the blurred shimmering look. I wonder if the same thing is happening here.

seems to be dynamic, I did a quick pixelcount yesterday and I also came away with 1800p or around ~1872p

and Horizon was also dynamic, which isn't great in combination with checkerboarding either

I tried to play the demo again on Xbox..

like, it literally is unplayable on Xbox at the moment. you just can't aim with any precision due to the massive deadzone and the weird reaction curve
