Still idly musing on the idea of picking up Bullet Girls.
Bullet Girls have that "The simple 2000 series" charm, like Onechambara and EDF. But is sold for like 7000 yen, lol.

I don't know, I feel it'll do quite a bit better than that, WW. Having the first game included helps a lot, IMHO.
I don't think there's any way for it to do worse than W101. But I do agree. The original Bayonetta did fairly low numbers for an action game, the sequel's going to do worse.
I was exaggerating a bit, but I suspect it will still do awfully.
Like if you guessed 300-400K worldwide I don't think that'd be ridiculously low.
Bayonetta 1 shipped 1.1 million on two very popular systems that were a good match for its target audience and the sell-through there wasn't exactly phenomenal.
Since then the genre has continued to decline, it's on an off-target system with really low sales, and the developer hasn't been having breakout success either on the platform or in general.
I'd like for it to do better as I really loved Bayonetta, but I'm notably pessimistic on this one.
Over 300k is absolutely not "fairly low numbers for an action game". What are you smoking?
Shipped or sold?

Steady sales I see
Honestly, I was getting PS3 confused with PS2.
PS4 can still use western sales to attract AAA stuff (as can Xbox One) but I wonder when we'll hit the tipping point there too? The biggest franchises like Monster Hunter and Dragon Quest already dumped consoles for mainline entries outside MMOs (and even the MMOs are crossing over to handhelds and smartphones now), when will the next tier of games like FF, RE and MGS join them? I wonder what a transition from PS/Xbox to iOS/Android would look like for say FFXVI or XVII?Why on earth would a 3rd party developer make a game for PS4/WiiU when they sell like that. At this point making a Japan exclusive game is just stupid and outside of few titles support for those consoles will be bare bones . Home consoles are really dead in Japan.
Yes, but it seems much less popular. Cards at the 7-11 nearby barely seemed touched compared to Fighters last time I was there, for example.

IIRC, those in hiska-kun's thread are just digital sales, with digital cards not counted.

Yeah, the PS2 -> PS3 transition has not been kind to action games and racing games in Japan.

Senran Kagura ;~;
And everything died again.
Pretty much. Huge blunder.looking at Bullet Girl result, maybe Marvelous will realize they made SK2 on the wrong platform

How did, say, DMC games perform compared to similar games in PS3 era? I honestly have no idea how the pre-05 japanese sales looked like for the most part.

PS4 sales in japan... I am sad. this means less and less Japanese games on consoles. PS4 was the last hope. now it needs an almost a miracle to revive console there.
I hope TGS bring some good exclusive for the Japanese PS4. this needs monster hunter PS4 exclusive level to give it a chance of revival.
enough shooting games for the Japanese people. obviously they do not like it much
Not sure why there is so much pessimism about Bayonetta 2. The character has gotten a lot more exposure since its debut, and there is zero competition at the time of its release. It should hit 200k fairly quickly.
It presumably depends on their Western sales, no?
Like MGS4 shipped 6 million copies worldwide, but only 1 million in Japan.
Even if Japan became zero sales, or even negative 1 million sales due to a rogue black hole, it would still make sense to make the game for consoles.
Similarly Resident Evil 6 has shipped 5.9 million copies, yet only 900K in Japan. Same situation applies.
Final Fantasy is a bit less cut and dry as the series is declining quite a bit in the West, though that also true locally, and generally only has 2/3rds of its sales abroad.
100k? I would be happy with 50k. As for Bayonetta, by some miracle I hope it hits 200k.

I have been thinking this. There are action games on handhelds. Every single hunting action game is an action game. Might not be a character one but it still is. What I want to say is that substitutes for those who want this type of game exist.
What the hell is happening with racing fans, though? They are not on home consoles and they clearly are not on handhelds, Are arcade racing games huge in Japan? Are the mobile ones extremely popular? Did people just quit playing racing games?
Japan used to be second only to the UK when it came to making racing games. Now they are barely being made and consequently (or the other way around) not being bought . Am I missing something.
Question!
How come 99% of Western games get localized and physically released in Japan despite the piss poor software sales the majority of them receive?
(yet some big Japanese games never seen the light of day over here)
There's no "tipping point" for everything honestly. FF, RE, and MGS will remain unaffected by Japan's decline for the most part because the series does better outside of Japan than in Japan. If they decline outside of Japan to a point where it's not longer worth making them, the franchises will more likely just fade away. Monster Hunter and Dragon Quest are what they are because they are insanely popular in Japan and not as popular anywhere else, so it makes sense to go all in on Japan, and follow whatever trends would keep them popular in Japan.

I can definitely see some "home-console" series (or better, "home-series" main chapters) coming to handhelds as well (i.e. PS4 and handhelds, not exclusively to one or to the other): mainly, Japanese focused ones, but I could see also 1-2 of those with a more international range becoming home and handheld releases, in order to sell better in Japan: I mean, if PS4 stays like this and there will be so few releases that peaks will be sporadic and non continuous, I fear its situation won't improve that much, thus bigger series, even the "international" ones, will suffer in Japan.
Still, if everything goes on like this, so it's an extreme scenario, something that could happen, but could perfectly not happen with a sudden change: we'll have to wait and see.

What is SCEJ doing? Minecraft is nearly at 100k digital....does that not give you the idea to make a retail copy? Are they waiting for the PS4 SKU?
SCEJ isn't the publisher.
