Media Create Sales: Week 32, 2014 (Aug 04 - Aug 10)

Dragon Ball Heroes ≠ Dragon Ball Z

That said, I am a bit surprised there's been no genuine Dragon Ball game on 3DS yet.

Not only that, but Dimps officially developed UM2, their logo is in the intro, but not in the first one.

Kind of a Dimps DB renaissance going on along with Xenoverse huh?

Dimps has never really vanished from Dragon Ball. They've always been involved with the Carddas games.

My stance on Xenoverse is a bit mixed thus far. None of the known staff have worked on the previous Dimps DBZ games. They're the crew behind the questionable Saint Seiya games. The team that used to make the Budokai games seems to have gone on to do the Capcom fighters.

I haven't played the games, but why is that? Doesn't it star Goku and the rest of the folks?

Dragon Ball Heroes is primarily a card-based arcade game. You play as your own character avatar and go through historic Dragon Ball fights alongside the game's own original nonsense. It seems to be a very popular game in Japan, to the point where there's actually manga series specifically about it. I kind of get the sense that there's an audience that might only be interested in Dragon Ball Heroes.

Are those publishers confident in its Eastern future?

Metal Gear, Silent Hill, Final Fantasy, and Kingdom Hearts are all series that have sales heavily skewed toward the West on console, some of them very heavily.

Capcom's only Japanese developed retail PS4 game is Deep Down, which despite not being announced for the West yet, has all its voice acting in English even when shown off in Japan.

I don't get the impression any of these games are being greenlit for PS4 with Japan in mind.

I'm thinking I should have put "confident" in humongous bold quotes because I'm on the same page as you. I really don't think these guys would care about the PS4 if they didn't own big properties with western appeal like Metal Gear or Kingdom Hearts.
I'm really not expecting too much from Sony's TGS showing in all honesty; maybe they'll be a new thing here or there, but I think that we'll most likely see a lot of their in-house software and the same few big Japanese titles that we already know about.

No kidding? Never knew that.

Wonder if the 3DS games are by the Sonic and Tamagotchi folks as a consistent handheld team.

Well, I have kind of a combined note/question.

1.) What should I do about notable self-published games and Road to TGS? Include them, and in the final breakdown, put them as self published?

2.) It seems Square Enix (and to a lesser extent, Capcom) are losing some notable staff, including from Kingdom Hearts, FF14, FF15, Dissidia (quite a few), and the Breath of Fire character designer. See the bolded below.

Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeINyD6bdMw

The game is a side scrolling RTS of sorts. Looks meatier than the general Japanese mobile card game stuff, so people probably should be too pissed off. It's developed by Oriflamme, a new mobile developer headed by Ryuji Ikeda, the main programmer for Dissidia Final Fantasy. There are a number of ex-S-E staff too, some of whom are very interesting.

The staff list at the end of the trailer:

Developers:
Ryuji Ikeda (Main Programmer for Dissidia Final Fantasy)
Kentaro Yasui (Main Programmer for Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts 2, and Final Fantasy Versus XIII [lol])
Takaaki Mizuno
Akinori Ishiai (VFX and Battle Programmer for Dissidia Final Fantasy)
Yu Yoshikawa
Yusuke Nozawa
Yuko Ikeda (Event Motion Designer for Final Fantasy XIII)

Production Designer: Tatsuya Yoshikawa (Character Designer for Breath of Fire series)
Sound Designer: Masayoshi Umezu (Ex-Capcom Sound Designer)
Director of Photography: Tomonori Hori
Written by: Kenichi Iwao (World Concept Planning for Final Fantasy XIV), Alexander O Smith (Localization God)

So, if Nintendo was indeed doing (or funding) a remaster for next year on WiiU, and assuming it's from the GC/PS2/Xbox gen, is there any that would please (I'm talking sales, not just "oh it's neat" opinions) the japanese market?
I fail to see anything from Nintendo from back then that would do something tbh.

Really hope the game is successful, and not just for the Wii U's future... I already want more HW, even though game isn't even out in Europe yet.

I also want the game to be successful since it may inspire Nintendo to go creative with their spin offs. So far, almost every Nintendo spin off is a Mario/Pokemon related one, but they could really grow their other franchises with more games in different styles.

Franchises like Fire Emblem, Zelda and others can use more exposition than they currently do.

It's still early, but I don't feel any hype for Phantasy Star Nova.
Bomba?

Seriously.

I was expecting the demo to do what Freedom Wars did and get tonnes of people on the Japanese forums hyped and producing some discussion, but I'm just not seeing it. Pre-orders on Amazon also dropped like a rock, whereas Freedom Wars shot up to the top when the demo became available.

Haven't got the chance to play it yet myself, but I wonder if it's not a very good demo. Time to go in depth and read all the Japanese comments.

Hmm.. lots of the comment seem to be all over the place in regards to complaints; with many things being complained about not actually being in the demo since it's meant to be battle only.

Hopefully it's a great game and does well, and from the sound of things gets a better demo showing the RPG aspects of the game.

Phantasy Star Nova's demo takes longer to download than play. That would be a major mark against it, haha. With Feedom Wars, the demo came out weeks before launch. There's still a lot of time for PSN, and I expect Tri-Ace to make adjustments due to the feedback they have received.

Pokemon TCGO is only out in the west. I don't think there's even a Japanese date yet, even though it's been in beta for 3 years.
It's actually not a browser game, but a downloadable game for PC/Mac.
The development is outsourced AFAIK.

PS4 can easily sell less than PS3. I haven't followed WW sales sales lately but I'm not so sure PS4 it's still ahead of every other console released ever by far. In fact looking at its NPD sales lately I doubt its monthly sales are so much better from 360 launch aligned, if you take out the explosive launch.

edit: Actually things are worse than what I was remembering.

Worldwide it's still way ahead every console except Wii like Psycho Mantis pointed out with that chart. In US yes this summer has been only decent sales wise but considering how ridiculously barren this summer has been release wise it's really not that surprising. I think that holidays are just taking bigger and bigger part of the yearly sales (just look at those insane october and november release lineups). For reference PS2 sales during fall and holiday season 2001:

August: 322,782
September: 343,719
October: 332,117
November: 919,131
December: 1,971,318

PS4 should sell more than PS2 at least during september-november period. December is not impossible either if PS4 behaves like leading console (PS3 was third place system for all of its life and its peak december was 1.36 million). We shall see.

I think it's even more skewed this time towards the rest of the world over the US+Japan. At least that's what the NPD thread is starting to disuss.

are you sure? US+Japan for the PS4 is ~4422k, or 44.22%, while PS3's total in US+Japan is somewhere around ~36m, or 42.86% assuming it's at 84 million WW

if anything it's just correcting itself to PS3 ratios

with this being said, it's doing significantly better than PS3 right now in the west, although lol at its Japan sales

Smash for 3DS just recently became the best "selling" game of 2014 on amazon Japan. 2.Yokai Watch 3. MK8 4+5 Yokai Watch 2. Quite an achievement for a game that hasn´t launched yet.

Are Amazon's and other online retailers sales include in these charts? I remember hearing that they aren't counted which would be a shame.

I remember retailers saying that pre-orders for Smash started stronger than Youkai Watch 2.

I don't know if it's going to outsell it first week. But one million FW isn't out of question.

Also, just 18 for the awaited launch...

Xbox 360 sold just 43.970 on launch week (Media Create). Maybe Xbox One will sell even less.

I think it will. The Xbox one doesn't have a lot of the advantages the 360 had. There's no doubt in my mind it'll fail to hit 500,000 LTD in Japan. However console launches have become much more front loaded in recent years so I'm inclined to give it at least a chance to beat the 360 FW.

speaking of which, how in the world was the original Xbox launch so much bigger than the 360's in Japan?

oh so #1000 was over 2k lol

Damn, that Xbox One aisle is probably bigger than all Vita aisles combined in the US.

Each tracker has a remarkably different number:

Media Create: 43,970
Dengeki: 54,349
Famitsu; 62,135

It wasn't for the lack of stock either (~30% sell-through). Probably a testament of how much of a failure the Xbox was in Japan, because it managed to sell over 120k at launch, while its successor dropped to half of it. On the other hand, the Xbox 360 was a lot more popular than the Xbox, so I won't be surprised if (given enough stock) the Xbox One launch sales actually increase over the previous console. I won't be surprised if it sells less either. =P

The only reason I doubt Xbox One doesn't open lower than 360 is due to 43K being a really small number. Xbox One is launching into a depressed hardware market after its cheaper/same price and more powerful competition. It's also the third Xbox platform. That's plenty of strikes against it.

This generation doesn't end one year after launch. We'll see how PS4 can follow last gen systems 2-3 years from now. If you still want to do such a short-term comparison take into account the supply problems Wii and PS2 (that you list).

Well yes obviously you can't predict too far to the future from first year of sales but I just don't see how from current numbers anything is indicating that PS4 is going to sell less than 100 million either. There is difference between PS2 numbers (155 million) and under 100 million. Also considering extremely abnormal life that Wii had it's not that worrying to fall behind its pace either (for a moment). PS4 is going to have major games and support for far longer than Wii had.

I can see Xbox One having a way better debut than Xbox 360 (even something like 100,000 units, nearer to Xbox OG's debut), but then collapsing to ungodly awful levels shortly after. Just like PS4 had a way better debut than PS3, but then it started collapsing pretty soon after the launch.

PS3 was very supply constrained.

Yeah, no. I agree about the 43k part, because less would be a total disaster, but 100K... I really don't see how that'd be possible with the total shift toward handhelds and mobile.

Things is, XB1 is not only more expensive that the Wii U / PS4, it also doesn't bring anything new compared to those 2 consoles... so I don't see how it'd do so much better than a console Microsoft was really pushing at the time (looks like they aren't even trying this time around). It's not like the X1 had FFXV, RE7, Tales f or Persona 5 at launch.

Then again, I know I sucks a prediction, so who knows? :p

Wow. I don't think I ever saw a Wii U display that big, I'm not in Japan, mind.
Come to think of it I don't think I've seen a Xbone display that big either, but I haven't been in Game much.

I haven't seen a video game display that large period in a retail store that isn't Gamestop. And the only reason I seen it at Gamestop because I live in an area that has one of the largest Gamestop's in the county. They're usually small as heck.

If you visit a Target/Walmart/Best Buy, they're usually half filled with various merch in a haphazard way, at least in my experience. Maybe I just visit when they're about to restock.
