So, with US-numbers we have:

Splatoon:
Jap.: 238.000
USA: 136.000
FR.: 24.000
UK: 23.000 (minimum)

Total: 421.000

Plus >40.000 from japanese digital sales? That would be 461.000 LTD.

Game is going to be a million seller worldwide. Plus amiibo sales, this should be quite good for Nintendo. ;)

Lowered expectations ftw? For a big company like Nintendo, merely having a million seller worldwide is pretty pathetic honestly. Publishers have cancelled franchises which "only" sell 2-3 million worldwide.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Honestly, considering the current sales, I doubt it'll stop at 1 million WW. Let's see how far it goes.

Of course lowered expectations. I mean, Splatoon came out on the least successful Nintendo hardware ever. The fact that it's outselling Super Mario 3D World in Japan (and likely the same in the United States), and it's generating some buzz should be considered good enough to keep the franchise alive; in Japan, Splatoon amiibo sold really well, and it seems stock is still problem, which signals an on-going interest for the game. Also: let's be honest, Splatoon is not a high-budget game that needs 5 million to break-even (well, probably no Nintendo games need that); it did have an AA promotion, but the game itself doesn't seem it took a huge effort in developing; this was basically confirmed by the recent Iwata Asks.

The most important thing, here, is the fact that Splatoon signals Nintendo's ability of creating unique and moderately successful IPs even in a market where it's becoming less and less relevant.

Also: what comparable IPs were shut down for selling only 2-3m worldwide?

Emmm any example of 2-3 million IP getting cancelled? As I know, 2-3 million is already a very big number in Japan.

And of course everyone had lower expectation. It is on Wii U. And this is a new unproven IP. Which all had the odds stacked again this IP.

Nintendo should cancel every game from now on, due to Wii U sw sales.
Honestly, I don't think that Nintendo will cancel Splatoon if it will sell 1mil WW, but the contrary: they will see it as a potentially important new IP

I think he was referring to worldwide numbers.

Many IPs were shut down for doing 2-3 million, but how many were comparable to Splatoon in terms of development, advertisement, installed base?

Big company does not mean big budget, and to be honest comparing any Nintendo developed game to the kind of EA/Ubisoft bloated monstrosities which fail to meet expectations despite 2-3 million sales is... well it's not a very good comparison at all.

It doesn't look like Splatoon had a very big development budget, it has been in development for what? 2 years? 6 months out of that there were 3-4 guys working on the prototype? Maybe the marketing costs were higher than a normal Nintendo game, but 2 mio. sales plus amiibo should make it profitable.

Cancelled franchises because sales of 2-3 million worldwide are usually big production from companies with lots of employees working on one game.

Well, if it sells a million for 20$ - 30$ (average to retailers + digital), they're going to generate 20.000.000$ to 30.000.000$ from the game alone.

The amiibos are going to add a few millions too. Furthermore, if Splatoon managed to move a couple of 10.000s consoles they get further money through indirect effects.

Most publishers don't have Nintendos margins and they don't have their own consoles, they have to sell more units to break-even (and probably have a different philosophy).

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

You really think publishers expect 30% of the userbase to pick up all their new IPs ? How big the company is doesnt really matter when you have to work with a limited installed base.

What were your expectations for Splatoon ?

IIRC, Pikmin 1 was slightly above 1m worldwide, with around 500k in Japan.

Splatoon strikes me as the kind of game that'll keep selling in the long run. I could see it doing 3m+ WW which would be a great result for Nintendo. I could be wrong, though. I'm pleasantly surprised it has resonated with the Japanese audience though...I expected bomba.

I highly doubt Pikmin had a marketing campaign as Splatoon has, in 2001 all their efforts were probably focused on Smash Bros (which was a worth)

Pikmin 1 became a hit also thanks to a song that was playing during advertisements. We cannot know how much it was advertised, BUT I remember Nintendo using Pikmin as an example of what GC could do, and it was pretty pushed by magazines at the time.

For Splatoon I feel a million is fine since the goal here is just to establish the franchise and have it sell notably larger numbers on a platform that isn't the biggest disaster since the Dreamcast.

That would be my assessment of the vast majority of Wii U games in general. Profitability is presumably very secondary at this point since we're talking about a new EOL platform that's a burning wreckage, so the goal is to salvage what you can build something out of the functional parts.

That said I wouldn't be surprised if Splatoon made money. The vast majority of the costs there is presumably advertising, so it depends how much they spent on that.

I know gameplay doesn't compare but would it make sense to compare Splatton's performance with that of Pikmin 1 on NGC?

Both are new nintendo IP's with a big marketing push on floundering consoles.

Pikmin is the most similar scenario I can think of looking back into nintendo's recent history.

was Pikmin 1 a multimilion seller worldwide?

EDIT: question is kind of offtopic since I mean WW, thanks for your understanding
Pikmin shipped 1.600.000 units worldwide and Pikmin 2 shipped 1.120.000 units.

Pikmin 3 is probably around a million units or less.

The sad part is. Even the gamecube did quite a bit better than Wii-U...
I like both but still depressing

As for Splatoon WW sales. My most positive prediction was 600K to 700K WW LTD.
Seems it will make that quite easily and pretty fast.

Pikmin 3 is probably around a million units or less.

I heard it was less than a million too. Can't find a source though

You're thinking wrong then.

I'm basing the following on this comment:

- Surprising first day sales for Rhythm Heaven: The Best+
- Nintendo should send new shipments or stock problems will happen.

Retailers have been incredibly conservative as of late.

New shipments should arrive by weekend if that comment withstands and raise it to over 200k.

Lowered expectations ftw? For a big company like Nintendo, merely having a million seller worldwide is pretty pathetic honestly. Publishers have cancelled franchises which "only" sell 2-3 million worldwide.

Bravely Default survived and was only a million seller ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Publishers dug their own grave on that front.

If you don't allow retailers to do refunds or price protection, they're unlikely to be aggressive in ordering your product.

My expectations are based on budget, lol. The 2-3 million WWLTD dead franchises had (probably) much (much) larger budgets than Splatoon's Garage devs even if they are EAD internal.

Endless optimism! *gushes*

True.

I mean, look at P&D: Mario Edition.

Retailers still have over 100k on store shelves and yet the title is barely selling 10k as is.

Caution is their best friend and I don't blame them.

this is a horrible example given how the sequel was treated and you know that :p

Regarding Pokémon spin offs that went on to sell over 1m units in Japan, this is what I have.

On Nintendo 64
Pokémon Stadium (the Japan only one): 1.37m
Pokémon Stadium 2 (the western one aka, Pocket Monsters Stadium: Gold & Silver): 1.14m

On Game Boy
Pokémon Trading Card Game: 1.39m
Pokémon Pinball: 1.02m

On Nintendo DS
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness / Time: 1.58m

All of this would be shipped.

That 1 million plus sold in Japan for the original PAD 3DS seems to be the only franchise expansion success PAD has had. The arcade games don't seem to be performing well, people don't seem super interested in the mobile mode expansions, and now even Super Mario can't make it sell again on 3DS.

Didn't even sell in the US.
Mario isn't the biggest name outside of Mario Kart anymore.

Mario can't save a franchise that is failing in general expansion everywhere. Mario prime and Mario Kart are still strong sellers and known brand entities.

But I think Nintendo realizes that they can't depend on Mario for everything hence Splatoon being its own identity, and Mario Maker going towards the Minecraft-crowd.

It's interesting how close these are to be honest. Seems like Wii U will pass PS4 in software next week due to Splatoon alone?

People saw it for what it was, a heavy Mario skin on a P&D game. I'm sure something like P&D Mario RPG would have sold better.

So, with US-numbers we have:

Splatoon:
Jap.: 238.000
USA: 136.000
FR.: 24.000
UK: 23.000 (minimum)

Total: 421.000

Plus >40.000 from japanese digital sales? That would be 461.000 LTD.

Game is going to be a million seller worldwide. Plus amiibo sales, this should be quite good for Nintendo. ;)
It sold worse in US than in Japan?

Do we have total NA numbers? Canada should be a sizable chunk.

Lowered expectations ftw? For a big company like Nintendo, merely having a million seller worldwide is pretty pathetic honestly. Publishers have cancelled franchises which "only" sell 2-3 million worldwide.

Can you name a franchise that was first party published (developed and published by a console maker for its own console) that was cancelled for selling "only" 2-3 million ww?

Germany should be around 20k too.

It still sold more launch week. It was about 150k, no?

Or maybe the extra day on the market is significant, fuck if I know.

The game sold approximately 118K on it's first day in Japan. We can safely assume the sales were pretty similar.

No thoughts on this?

splatoon should sell at least 2 million WW in the end, since it is pushing amiibo and amiibo seems to be helping it also.

Splatoon is pullig bigger numbers. About 23k software sales outside of Splatoon for WiiU. I think the WiiU usually lies around that number when new releases arent happening. The numbers for the other platforms also seems fairly normal, no big fluxuation one way or the other i think.

I think first party platform holders are obviously more lenient about continuing franchises. I was just commenting on how people are celebrating this like it's a huge success. It's not. The game is doing well given the circumstances, but if this is the greatest success of the year for Nintendo, then it's a pretty shitty year!
