Oh well, at least the 3DS is on the top. The PS4 selling poorly isn't entirely a bad thing to me, tbh.

Almost all of which were on previous formats as well, not necessarily pushing the new format.

You don't think PS4 would do better in Japan if it had cross gen versions of FFXV, DQXI and RE7 out now? Well that kinda happened in west. Those huge multiplatform titles absolutely sell the systems and PS4 version is the best console version of those games.

I'm always baffled by some of the short termism in this thread. PS4 is not dead in Japan. It's selling low numbers because there are no games. Once games start to come, sales will pick up. Wii U is slightly different because it's struggling worldwide.

They really should have made a bundle for Japan/dropped the hardware price (I don't think Japan has had a price cut since launch..just more stuff bundled).

If I'm correct, they didn't have a price cut because WiiU price there is $300. So there's no need for any price drop.

Do better? Sure. Do well? No.

Hype sold the PS4 in the West.

You know better than to make sense when people want to be excited.

Last Year numbers:

| PSP # | 6.833 |
| WIU | 6.058 |
| WII | 1.189 |
| 360 | 272 |

This is mostly a post gold week effect.

I don't get the dramatics about these numbers. Sony doesn't have an impact title for PS4 in Japan yet, until they do it's probably not gonna sell too great.

Japan is on track to become less relevant than most european countries at this rate. The market here has imploded, the region only really matters for handhelds now and even those are heavily declining.

Nintendo needs to realize this too when they launch their next console in a few years.

And for the morbidly curious, Moero Chronicle is actually a pretty decent game.
Well, decent in the gameplay, indecent in everything else.
Decently indecent.

The Wii U is struggling because there are no games.

The Wii U outselling the PS4 on their debut year (In Japan)... Is going to be interesting. Nobody predicted this...
I did.

Despite that, I don't think Sony (and most people here) expected sales so abysmal like this.

For all the talk of Japan losing its relevance, they seem to collectively be the ones following games more than hype and PR. If only we were all that irrelevant.

serious question, Can the PS4 beat the Wii U LTD by the end of the year?

There are 32 weeks remaining in 2014. The current difference between the two systems LTD is 1,172,418. The PS4 needs to outsell the Wii U by 36,638 units on average each week to overtake by the end of the year.

That won't happen.

There are 84 weeks remaining until the end of 2015. The current difference between the two systems LTD is 1,172,418. The PS4 needs to outsell the Wii U by 13,957 units on average each week to overtake by the end of 2015.

Not impossible, but I don't see that happening, either.

The Wii U is struggling because there are no games.
It has struggled globally pretty much since launch. It has struggled in the absence of games. It has struggled in the presence of games. It has struggled at the old price. It has struggled at the current price. It struggles because it doesn't offer compelling perceived value, part of that is the lack of regular software releases - but not all. As two other platforms have just released and have had a dearth of software, and are not struggling.

The main problem here is that Japanese devs are still relying on PS3 instead on focusing on 3DS (which has a huge install base) and Vita (which could have a better growth than PS4 in Japan)

Those systems are beginning to slow down in the West, as the hype dies down.

Interesting

What about 2014 alone?

2014 WiiU vs 2014 Ps4?

Part of me is going to laugh when most of the remaining Japanese devs go under after they try and fail to catch the mobile unicorn.
The rest of me will cry. :(

Well let's just agree to disagree. I just think that people really underestimate the mainstream appeal of the PS4/Xbone launch line ups in west. Just compare them to any launch before. You don't find another launch line up with same kind of mainstream appeal as games like COD Ghost or BF4 have (Both are sequels to games that sold over 20 million units). Cross gen or not those are fucking huge games.

I still thinking that this gen is going to sell a lot worse than the past gen globally. (Even with the great start of the PS4 and XBOne). :(

Or because a lot of Japanese game companies and consumers have switched to handheld/mobile, resulting in both less games and a smaller userbase, which actually ends up being somewhat of a vicious circle.

I think the problem from that standpoint is that companies targetting the PS3 have too few resources to instead produce for the PS4, and too many resources to produce for 3DS and Vita. The right theoretical direction for those companies to jump would be to Wii U, but that's not producing numbers to justify that shift. So they stick at the level of fidelity they can for as long as they can.

I do wonder a little if part of Nintendo's hopes for the Wii U were for something similar to the PSP and 3DS; become a natural progression path for development without having to take on vastly more resources. The problem was that devs didn't bite on that concept like they did with the 3DS.

This is rather sad. 3DS is doing numbers that companies would have hoped for in a bad week. Vita is slowly edging back towards 10k. Home consoles are flatlining.

It's a dark time for the industry. Not just for Japan as these sorts of things are happening everywhere. Xbox One selling worse last month than Xbox 360 did in any April until this year.

This is so sad :(

It's not sad. It's a result when companies don't create interesting and appealing platforms. Why is there nothing like Wii Sports last generation? Where are some new experiences? People get a lot more of those on their smartphones, which they already own.

Exactly. It's like they would have launched with a new Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Monster Hunter and Resident Evil in Japan.
