So I like building Gundams but I've never actually watched any of the anime. Is that weird/uncommon? I just like building models and I dig the designs. I'd like to try getting into it, but a lot of people IRL or online seem to have really different ideas about where to start. Should I just start from the very beginning? Dated anime is no problem for me. If I want to watch something relevant to recently released models, is that a bad way to get into the franchise?

You could start with the current series - Iron Blooded Orphans. It's quite entertaining and doesn't tie into any other timelines (in any meaningful way). You'll have a prime selection of fresh model kits to choose from too.

You can either start with Wing or Seed. If you don't mind the animation or disco soundtrack then you can watch the first series or at least the compilation movies.

I was about to disagree with starting with Wing or Seed, but if you are coming from a builder perspective it might be good to start with a series with a lot of diverse cool designs. I'd personally say start with 0079 or 08th MS Team, but Iron Blooded Orphans is actually a pretty good place to start too.

Well I thought Wing and Seed were good cause they're practically remakes of the OG series with their own unique quirks to keep them interesting. Shit Wing is pretty much a condensing of 0079, Zeta and CCA with a more modern soundtrack.

I love the RG Astray. Once I got the waist snapped in well, it held up perfectly for me.

Only warning is watch out with the posable hands. One of the fingers snapped on mine. It's the first RG that I had that happen to. Not sure if the multi-color molding makes them more brittle or I just had bad luck.

The fixed hands are better at holding weapons anyway, but those are sadly molded in a single color and painting the white parts on hands that small can be tricky.

I fixed the waist, just like you said .. was being really stubborn but snapped it in finally and it worked perfectly.

I'm going to avoid the posable hands going to go with posing with the beam rifle and the shield with the zooka attached to the back.

I would start w/ Gundam Seed as well, think this is a place where a lot of new fans jumped in. (IBO is hot too)

I really need to find some time to watch IBO, I've only seen the first ep and just acted like it didn't even exist afterwards. I Prefer just marathoning shows these days, the waiting a week for one ep just kills it for me these days. I still need to finish Build Fighters Try and start up G Reco and rewatch Turn A.

If you're in doubt, grey won't steer you wrong. As long as you don't go full Dalong, you're probably okay.

Gundam markers are pretty forgiving, though. Rubbing alcohol will get rid of it if you want to switch. As with anything, try it out on the runners before going to the model itself.

I actually like how Dalong use panel lining and use their reviews on how I want my kits to look for example:

Thanks for the advice, everyone. Looks like I'll probably start with IBO/0079 and maybe jump to Orphan just so I can see some relevant suits.

Anime is a mistake. Just build models...

Unfortunately that ship has sailed for me. Anime is a mistake I can't undo.

Finished the RG Blue Frame Astray assembly.

Just waiting for some paint/topcoat, then going to panel/apply stickers/topcoat.

Really fun build and it looks great.

So I don't know anything about Thunderbolt but that first episode was fucking amazing and Io liking Jazz only made me like him more, though that sexual assault bit wasn't exactly welcome. There's a manga for this right? How good is it?

It's pretty good. Io isn't even the best character. Daryl is. Io definitely has the cooler suit though. I don't usually like people from the Zeon side, except that detective in Ark Performance's manga about stopping an assassination plot to kill Gihren. Only to have him killed by his sister.

I finished my FG Zaku II, being super rusty I really wanted to get a feel for my paints and tools and he was pretty good for that. I wasn't quite prepared for the FG build quality... But I'll be glad to have him if I want to try some damage or weathering in the future.

I love the bears however, don't know much about Build Fighters but the kits from that show I've seen make me very interested, next kit on deck is a HG Hi-Mock

I just received my DM - Destiny, it is not metal build :( None of the parts are metallic, I guess the box picture is the painted version.

Wing is kinda a dry run of SEED in a way as SEED tries to be an even more shameless ripoff of the original series and Destiny is a ripoff of Zeta, though not as faithful as SEED is to 0079. They both made the smart decision to put a lot of bishie guys in the main cast and give them a bunch of love interests/ship fodder, though SEED was the one that really took off.

I've always been amazed at how poorly SEED did over here when they got around to dubbing it considering how well Wing did and I guess you have to put all of the blame squarely on the shows they followed it up with. 0083 and 08th MS did well as limited run series at midnight but MSG, G Gundam, and especially SD Gundam failed miserably. MSG wasn't doing well before 9/11 and after it it became impossible to air.

Finished my mg rx-78 2.0. I love the anime colors and insane possibility but I feel the char zaku 2.0 is a more durable kit. Also I built the right arm weird and then some super glue happened and ect. So yeah I am going to build the origin or 3.0 to replace my 2.0 later this year and salvage the parts.

p.s will post pics later but the the final build is pretty I just can't hold the shield in the correct arm due to super glue and broken pieces lol.

The weird thing to me is how the west has proven multiple times it still loves Wing like when Toonami reaired it......yet no one that has control of Gundam (namco bandai or even Koei for DWG) ever think to stick Wing Zero or any Wing stuff on the cover to sale stuff over here.

None of the 3 DWG gamed ever put Zero on and stubbornly stuck to UC or OO for 3.

I mean, just why?

Wing was bad and the best thing to come out of that series was the amount of doujin and hilarious fanart and webcomics and Tallgeese/Fenice/Rinascita/Alba

Like this.

Even 00's take on the whole thing was better in my opinion.

Wing wasn't good certainly.

That said it has better designs for the Grunts then any other series to me and it still has the best lead character if only for a few episodes because it actually tried to do something that wasn't a fucking Good GuyVSBad Guy like nearly ever other gundam series.

I'd take Wing over garbage like Zeta, SEED and AGE any day of the week. Also out of all those designs the only good one is Wing Fenice, Wing F/R and Alba are generic over designed trash that becomes pointless and loses any since of soul that Wing Fenice had.

Wing is a bad TV show and probably the Gundam series I'm least likely to revisit. I would watch (parts of) AGE before dredging Wing back up. The only Wing I might check out would be watching some of Endless Waltz, but that's purely for the animation.

Now, Glory of the Losers is such a huge damn improvement and a piece of media that actually makes me like Wing.

Why do I like the least liked Gundam shows? I like Wing, Zeta and Victory the most from the Full shows. I like 0079, but it's not my favorite, I really have to be in the right mood for that show. I like Seed and Destiny is like a guilty pleasure to me. I like half of 00, haven't seen season 2 since I bough DVD's years ago. Makes me feel like the insane member of the community.
