So I like building Gundams but I've never actually watched any of the anime. Is that weird/uncommon? I just like building models and I dig the designs. I'd like to try getting into it, but a lot of people IRL or online seem to have really different ideas about where to start. Should I just start from the very beginning? Dated anime is no problem for me. If I want to watch something relevant to recently released models, is that a bad way to get into the franchise?
You can either start with Wing or Seed. If you don't mind the animation or disco soundtrack then you can watch the first series or at least the compilation movies. So I like building Gundams but I've never actually watched any of the anime. Basically this!Starting with IBO isn't a bad option.
If you want to go through the series afterwards, work your way through in production order.

Well I thought Wing and Seed were good cause they're practically remakes of the OG series with their own unique quirks to keep them interesting. Shit Wing is pretty much a condensing of 0079, Zeta and CCA with a more modern soundtrack.I was about to disagree with starting with Wing or Seed, but if you are coming from a builder perspective it might be good to start with a series with a lot of diverse cool designs. I'd personally say start with 0079 or 08th MS Team, but Iron Blooded Orphans is actually a pretty good place to start too.
I love the RG Astray. Once I got the waist snapped in well, it held up perfectly for me.
Only warning is watch out with the posable hands. One of the fingers snapped on mine. It's the first RG that I had that happen to. Not sure if the multi-color molding makes them more brittle or I just had bad luck.
The fixed hands are better at holding weapons anyway, but those are sadly molded in a single color and painting the white parts on hands that small can be tricky.

I really need to find some time to watch IBO, I've only seen the first ep and just acted like it didn't even exist afterwards. I Prefer just marathoning shows these days, the waiting a week for one ep just kills it for me these days. I still need to finish Build Fighters Try and start up G Reco and rewatch Turn A.I would start would Gundam Seed as well, think this is a place where a lot of new fans jumped in. (IBO is hot too)
You should recommend Victory to those you want dead.I only recommend seed to people who I hate

Damn it I used black on red.Grey - white.
Brown - Red/Yellow
Black-Blue
You might want to grey on blue depending on how light the shade of blue is.
I actually like how Dalong use panel lining and use their reviews on how I want my kits to look for example:If you're in doubt, grey won't steer you wrong. As long as you don't go full Dalong, you're probably okay.
Gundam markers are pretty forgiving, though. Rubbing alcohol will get rid of it if you want to switch. As with anything, try it out on the runners before going to the model itself.

omg ewwwww! OK nvm I see what you guys are talking about, but I am still going to use them as a guide as to what can be paneled and what not.dalongface

Orphan is the O in Ibo but al good. 0079 is so good and BrutalThanks for the advice, everyone. Looks like I'll probably start with IBO/0079 and maybe jump to Orphan just so I can see some relevant suits.
Unfortunately that ship has sailed for me. Anime is a mistake I can't undo.

So I don't know anything about Thunderbolt but that first episode was fucking amazing and Io liking Jazz only made me like him more, though that sexual assault bit wasn't exactly welcome. There's a manga for this right? How good is it?

davidwhangchoi-thanks for pushing me to take the next step and start paneling/detailing. It is super easy

The weird thing to me is how the west has proven multiple times it still loves Wing like when Toonami reaired it......yet no one that has control of Gundam (namco bandai or even Koei for DWG) ever think to stick Wing Zero or any Wing stuff on the cover to sale stuff over here.Wing is kinda a dry run of SEED in a way as SEED tries to be an even more shameless ripoff of the original series and Destiny is a ripoff of Zeta, though not as faithful as SEED is to 0079. They both made the smart decision to put a lot of bishie guys in the main cast and give them a bunch of love interests/ship fodder, though SEED was the one that really took off.
I've always been amazed at how poorly SEED did over here when they got around to dubbing it considering how well Wing did and I guess you have to put all of the blame squarely on the shows they followed it up with. 0083 and 08th MS did well as limited run series at midnight but MSG, G Gundam, and especially SD Gundam failed miserably. MSG wasn't doing well before 9/11 and after it it became impossible to air.

Wing was bad and the best thing to come out of that series was the amount of doujin and hilarious fanart and webcomics and Tallgeese/Fenice/Rinascita/Alba
Like this.
Even 00's take on the whole thing was better in my opinion.
