The Gundam |OT2| Another 5 years of Gunpla, Origins, and GUNDAMUUUU!

Why are you skipping G Gundam? That's the best. Imagine, Victory was so bad they had to change everything about Gundam for the next series and abandon the main timeline.
Since you already stated you didn't watch Victory you probably can't state that it's good or bad. You're probably basing your opinions on Corvosol's rants on it.

Victory is fantastic, buthe production on G started before V even aired. After all the first episode of G aired one week after the last of V. G was designed by a committee to sell model kits and toys and then the story was back filled. It was literally designed to capitalize on the popularity of DBZ and Street Fighter 2 in 1992-3 when Gs preproduction started.

Thank you, I love that I'm not alone in this train of thought. G Gundam is the least Gundam of Gundam shows, but it's still very entertaining. Now that you put it that way Domon traveling to every country to fight the representative of that country is very Street Fighter 2, I never put it together for some reason.

Ha, I thought I read somewhere that G was in response to the general negative response to V, not just the TV show.
No. G was in response to the fact that F91 and V didn't have many Gundams in them and Gundam model kits and toys always sold better than non Gundam MS. It's Genesis was as a series that would be all Gundams to maximize sales. And in development it became a shonen tournament series since that was what was hottest atm. It was basically "what will get 10 year old boys to beg their parents for the most money"

It is why pretty much every subsequent Gundam series until Unicorn had been just Gundams hand over fist.

Well, there was Turn A but yeah, it was mostly an unbroken Gundam Fest.
Yes, and unfortunately as amazing as Turn A was the shitty model sales kept Tomino's sequel Turn A Space series from ever getting greenlit. Which led to fucking dumpster fire goofy pointy ass shitty giant backpack gundamfest SEED

Oddly enough I like Katoki's remakes of the Wing suits more than the stuff in Seed. The suits in Seed seemed a little too busy or similar design wise.

lol! I plan to pick up the blu-rays one day
If you ever watch it watch it with an open mind. I watched it years before I joined gaf and found out how hated Victory was, even after finding out how hated it is I'll still say it's my second favorite and I've seen a lot of Gundam shows.

You are talking to someone who loves g reco. So I am pretty open minded lol

I still need to see that and GBFT. If it's better than at least Age, I might not have that much of a problem with it since I couldn't even get through 2 full eps of Age. I think I was Gundamed out when I tried to watch Try and only finished the first five eps.

Victory is only hated on GAF near as I can tell. On most other places I've spent time at, Gundam.com, gundaofficial forums, mahq, etc V has been revered as the darkest but still great series.

Wait. It's actually adored? I spend too much time on gaf then. I guess that and hearing about Tomino issuing apology letters regarding Victory have skewed my opinion on how it's received then cause I love Victory. It's dark as fuck, but so is Zeta so I guess I just like "fuck this shit and fuck this entire fucking cast 'killemall Tomino'"

Really? It seems most places I go, it's pretty divisive. But that pretty much amounts to here, /m/ and /r/gundam.

I go to places that are pretty much Gundam centric, as I said. So there may be a difference between general Otaku and Gunotas.

It's Gundam for Shonen Jump. I like G more than I used to, but it's not what I watch when I'm in the mood for an actual Gundam show. I really don't even hate it, it's just the Gundam show I find myself in the rarest mood to watch. I like it enough to buy it at some point if that makes any kind of sense to you.

Its frankly better written and more consistent than most of the other series despite being a super robot tournament fighter.

G Gundam does hit a lot of the traditional Gundam themes such as economic disparity between Earth and the colonies, environmentalism, and how war is a bad thing. But it doesn't have the usual Gundam "road trip" formula and its over-the-top tone makes it feel quite different from most of the other series in the franchise.

I quite like it overall, myself.

I enjoy G Gundam quite a bit, and it's the only Gundam my wife really likes, but I think it gets away with a lot because of that over the top tone. I'd have a hard time agreeing that it's better written than quite a few of the others. I would agree it is one of the most enjoyable though.

It's a fun show, probably a bit too formulaic than it needed to be for some of the intro eps, but once it broke that formula it became legit good at least. I think it hit its stride when Master Asia shows up.

Exactly this. I still remember thinking the show was going to be a slogfest with the first couple of episodes, but once they hit Shinjuku(?) with Master Asia, it became great as you started to see more of Domon's characterization.

The photo trails off in importance after around episode 10. Once the introductions are done, it moves on to the Shinjuku arc which shifts several motivations around.

2 episodes left of Victory.

The last few episodes have been pretty great, gonna finish this off in my lunch break today.

The last few episodes are amazing. In particular, Episode 50 probably has one of my top favorite moments in any Gundam series, with the
last stand of the old men and the Reinforce Junior
.

They killed
Odelo

:(

Edit: Done. That's the main line UC stuff all over and done with. Victory was good overall, and I'd say the final arc was even great. It just dragged a bit midway.

The Reinforce Jnr's sacrifice was great. Loved the insert song here too.

Odelo's death hit me the most, after everything he survived I thought he was safe.

Katejina is batshit insane.

Cronicle's death was over so quickly, the cut to the mid show Haro card made it hard to even process what happened.

That knife to the back from Katejina was low even for her.

But she gets her just desserts and ends up a blind, brain damaged, homeless beggar.

Nice that they included that little epilogue scene.

I can go around paying 70 bucks for the kit ....now paying 100 for the shipping well...
guess i'll just buy some HG gouf custom since i've been dying to have one

yeah whether you're getting hg or MG kits, if you're in the US, it's probably better to buy kits that's been released for a while on Amazon as it'll come out the same cost. plus you get it shipped faster and have a good return policy in case it's damaged during shipping without worry about returning overseas. but for new releases i;d go with HLJ, amiami ,etc.

hlj you can group your shipments to lower shipping on multiple items and store them up to 60 days to combine them in private warehouse.

it's still 99 on amazon.... pretty damn high...

I think Katejina ranks right up there with Haman as best Gundam villain. And it's nice to see that even you, a person that was a Gundam noob last month was able to appreciate Victory. You're like #7 in the Victory Gundam fan club around here. If I remember right it was stated that Katejina didn't even deserve a fate as simple as death, Tomino made her suffer in the end. Not only is she blind and brain damaged she's utterly alone. Cronicle is gone and they loved each other and I don't even think Uso recognizes her in the end. She's just alone and defenseless.

That's my favorite. I think I saw it before any other Gundam. Video store had the first two tapes back when I was a pre-teen (I think that's how old I was?) Didn't entirely understand the full context, but loved the heck out of the animation, the story, and Uraki's struggles.

Started on Wing yesterday. I'm liking it so far but holy crap are these Gundams/pilots OP. In UC even taking down 15 guys in their career was a big deal but here they're taking out entire facilities on their own.

Not to mention Heero jumping out of a building and surviving without his parachute haha.

Yea The show writes Heero as if he is the ultimate cyborg instead of a human teenager

AU is all about tons of Gundams to sell tons of gunpla. Thanks, Bandai! Usually they can be pretty OP. Maybe X can be excluded. It has multiple Gundams, but not everyone is really strong neither are their Gundams.

AU is the universe where practically every pilot in a non Gundam is fucking canon fodder. If you want skills you better have a name written somewhere in the script. I think there are about three moments in the show where Heero should've died, but he just tanks that shit.

I honestly think the top 3 pilots on the boy band side are Heero, Wufei and Duo in that order.

So I started reading Ecole du Ciel, and I'm wondering if this is actually the first time a mobile suit pilot academy is actually a setting in a Gundam spinoff. Seems like it would be a more popular/generic concept, but I don't recall it ever being used in any other spinoff or series.

And the headless GMs look pretty weird.
