My VGA cable came yesterday! So i went and finished Dynamite Cop last night if you can call that "finished". Pretty short game, but seeing as it's pretty much an arcade game, it's not bad. i've only beat the game w/ the John McClane wannabe character, and with the girl, i managed to get to the last boss but died and lost all my continues. i miss these types of beat em up games. havent tried the last character yet. i can see why the game got the less than stellar reviews it received back in the day.

i'm also currently stuck on the boss of 1-2 in Sturmwind. this game looks amazing with the vga cable. but how in the world am i supposed to damage that guy when he's hovering over me and my guns can only shoot sideways? green gun is useless. blue can somewhat damage the boss that's hovering above. red can kinda shoot upwards, but ugh. i got to the phase where the ship can go underwater and then i ... died again. man, this game is hard. took me a few days to understand the whole powerup system as theres no documentation or anything.

overall, i'm very glad i got this vga cable. world of difference compared to the composite cables.

So now it's working fine and I've been buying a few new games for it, but the copy of Phantasy Star Online I ordered refuses to work properly. The music in the hub always starts to skip at some point and when I attempt to go to the first level it just hangs on the loading screen forever. I even attempted the old "turn the DC upside-down" trick and it managed to actually let me play the level but once I tried to go back to the hub it got stuck on the loading screen again.

Every other disc I've been playing works perfectly (SA1/2, Sonic Shuffle, Pen Pen, Metropolis Street Racer, etc.) so I don't know what the problem is exactly. Anyone know if it's likely to be an issue with the disc, or with the system itself?

All you're doing by adjusting the potentiometer is buying yourself some time. PSO is probably reading more often than other games. I would play the GDEmu lottery if I were you.

Yeah, I read that "fixing" the laser is just prolonging the inevitable, but I wanted to make sure it was the system causing the issue.

Looked up GDEmu and lottery is right, I'm sure more dedicated DC fans than me will be F5'ing that page every 5 seconds next week. I'll probably just end up finally buying a replacement console on eBay in a few months.

My friends were over playing cvs2 on my tv but i had a second setup on a dc hooked up to a monitor with vga and now one of them only wants to play the dc version because of how gorgeous it looked.

Hmm, if you got it from NCSX that'd mean it was an import in the first place so I guess that the chances of finding one in the UK/EU would be unlikely.

Are there any US websites or I guess even small specialist shops that would be worth checking for retro systems other than eBay? If I have to use a proxy or beg a friend to get this for me I will.

Yeah I'm aware of the Retrobright thing, but it's not a permanent fix and I don't want to have to do it to my countless systems every few years.

Phantasy Star Online shares a lot of aesthetic similarities with the original series. Whereas the original games were traditional RPGs that took place in sci-fi dystopian universe, PSO is an action RPG more along the lines of the original Diablo. It's item system is one of the best but if you are obsessed with getting certain items you'll have a bad time since it is only really possible to get some things with multiplayer due to the way drops are determined.

Both the originals and PSO are in my top games ever (so much so that I have a Phantasy Star tattoo).

I never really followed GamePro into the late 90s, kinda gave up on them after '93 or so. While their coverage of Sega's path forward after Saturn wasn't as extensive as that of Next Generation, EGM and even Ultra Game Players, it was certainly there. Starting off with a bit of 3DO / Matsushita (Panasonic) M2 coverage, once part of Sega's road to find a Saturn successor, before the 3Dfx - PowerVR faceoff in early-mid '97, GamePro does a decent job of illustrating Sega's road to Dreamcast.

That is amazing ^ given the Dreamcast name wasn't known until May 1998.

this question comes up a lot online, but i can't help but feel it'dve been an even bigger disaster.

for one, the cost in '98 (especially with them having to outsource & share royalties on em, unlike sony) would've been tremendous, and for a company that just does games, they likely looked at all that following their last gen CD medium & thought it might be unnecessary vs their own proprietary format. moreover, that added cost would definitely have nixed their chances at that awesome US price tag.

i get that DVD took off (especially in japan) but they were up against the behemoth of sony's momentum & already dealing with people & a number of developers clearly okay with waiting on sony's next offering; upping the entry price & splitting software revenue stream (the one thing they were heavily banking on to finally turn a profit) by putting themselves in there early & with DVD but at a comparable price tag doesn't strike me as a winning strategy, you know?

we all agree the DC's life was tragically short but controller design aside (and, you know, GD rom exploit aside) there's not much i'd have changed with the system itself...it really feels like the best way to make that system work would've been to fix mistakes they made in the gen prior losing so much momentum/fanbase.

PS i would totally have bought that gamepro artist concept render thing too

The true problem was all the traitors who bought Playstations instead of Saturns though. Maybe that and poor management that did things like build multiple systems in parallel across the planet, create conflict between divisions, misread trends, and prematurely kill support for hardware that's still on the market.

The GD rom was developed by Toshiba so Sega didn't spend any R&D on that.

As for the traitors... It wasn't a hard decision to take the psx over the saturn here in NA. Today I prefer the saturn but the psx was an absolute juggernaut.

Yup. I was all PSX, all the time. I did have an N64 as well for exclusives (Goldeneye and Zelda got a LOT of play), but being a teenager at the time, all I wanted to do was play whatever new game Squaresoft or Capcom had out on the PSX (Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Megaman Legends).

I love my Saturn now, but I didn't want one at all back in the day, there was nothing that appealed to me.

Back onto the Dreamcast, I rented one a few times in early 2000 and loved my time with Sonic Adventure, House of the Dead 2, and Crazy Taxi, but again all the games I wanted to play were coming to PS2, so I couldn't get too interested in the console. Code VEronica was the only title I was super jealous about.

Growing up during the 90's I wanted anything Sega. I originally wanted a Sega Saturn because of Nights, Virtua Fighter, and Virtual On among other games. But by the time I saved enough money to buy one it was done, N64 was just coming out and I was hooked on that.

I later bought a Dreamcast and a Saturn. Sold my Dreamcast for a Gamecube, felt bad so I bought another Dreamcast. Just last week my house got broken into and every console that was made (except for Virtual Boy, Atari's, 32x, Sega CD, and Neo Geo since I never bought them) were stolen. So a big chunk of my childhood was taken away, I just bought my third Dreamcast and my second Genesis model 1... Starting all over again.

summer of '96 i had spent some of my saturn savings on a PSX & some games already, was saving back up for a car & didn't get one after getting my mom's car into an accident...coming back from a TRU N64 kiosk with Mario 64 which i'd run over to after work & play till they closed up/kicked me out. after the price drops/some games showed up i recall still debating a saturn but no lie, Mario 64 single handedly fucked that idea right up

i grew up with a near-launch master system, had genesis soon after its launch and was day 1 on a dreamcast - even got others in my dorm to go in likewise. saturn was the only time i wasn't there on team sega in the day. fuck, i traded my gameboy for game gear $.

Game Boy never had a Shining title so it loses by default. Game Gear had 3. It also had GG Shinobi and Columns.

My first Sega console of any sort was a Sega Game Gear. I was in heaven! To actually play Sonic the Hedgehog in a handheld was amazing at the time. Later on when I was 14 my Uncle gave me my cousin's Sega Genesis model 2 because it wasn't being played anymore and just collecting dust. I was so excited I played Sonic The Hedgehog 2 until my eyes bled. I still remember going into my local video rental store and renting Vectorman..

I wish I was onboard for Sega Saturn and Dreamcast when they first came out. Later on in life I was hooked on Astal, Nights, Clockwork Knights, Croc, Sonic Adventure, Soul Calibur, Crazy Taxi (wasted quarters playing it at Godfather's Pizza, parents were pissed that I blew $10 in quarters).

As for recommendations, obviously you like RPGs so you should get Skies of Arcadia and Shenmue as well. Was Grandia 2 released in English? If so get that too. (I still need to play both of those but I'm playing in Japanese so I need a lot of time to get into it).

Otherwise, Dreamcast is the ultimate arcade system. Anything that is arcade oriented is great on the system from fighting games like MVC and Soul Calibur to shmups like Ikaruga (which will probably be a problem for you due to region locking). Also, if it's not on your radar and you have friends, try to get your hands on a copy of Power Stone. Actually, just buy everything Capcom made for the Dreamcast.

I have Grandia 2, from the bit I played years ago I really enjoyed it. It's kind of funny that the voice actor for the main character is Leonardo from TMNT.

I think I pretty much like anything that was released on the Dreamcast except for a couple that I don't understand. As far as the age? I didn't have any money. I used to hang out at the local video game store and play their Dreamcast all day.

I really want Skies of Arcadia but Ebay sellers are selling it for a lot of money. The only rpg I have is Grandia 2. Is TimeStalkers any good? I see some mixed reviews for it.

I babysat my cousin to get money for a Dreamcast. It was probably the thing I was the most hyped for ever. It's literally all I could talk about.

Dreamcast is slowly getting to Saturn levels. Now's probably the time to get into it. I wouldn't wait much longer.

As for TimeStalkers... eh.. I want to like it because of Climax but I can't get into it. Maybe if I got it when it first came out but now it's just not that interesting.

Luckily none of the games from Dreamcast, Genesis, and Saturn were stolen. But still it makes me upset.

Two games that are on my priority list right now is Virtual On (either Dreamcast or Saturn), and Skies of Arcadia.

Dreamcast is like most other retro systems, most of the really good games cost a lot. You've already mentioned the two 800 pound gorilla's for rpgs. I had a good time with Record of Lodoss War, but that might be because I liked the anime. I thought Silver was decent too. That's all you're going to get for RPG's after Grandia 2 and SOA, decent and ok games. The Evolution games were rather boring.

I bought almost all my DC games when they were new, so I'm not all that in the know for exact prices, but like others have said, you can't really go wrong with anything from Capcom on the system (Mars Matrix is a Favorite).

Some of my favorite games have seen better sequels too, but we spent a lot of time with stuff like Power Stone 2, SanFran Rush 2049, Viruta Tennis and Zombie Revenge.

Get yourself a mouse and keyboard if you can, the FPS's shouldn't be much I wouldn't think. Unreal, Quake and Outtrigger. Plus, once you have them, you can use the mouse for Silent Scope and the keyboard for Typing of the Dead. Man what a great system.

I bought almost all my DC games when they were new, so I'm not all that in the know for exact prices, but like others have said, you can't really go wrong with anything from Capcom on the system (Mars Matrix is a Favorite).

Some of my favorite games have seen better sequels too, but we spent a lot of time with stuff like Power Stone 2, SanFran Rush 2049, Viruta Tennis and Zombie Revenge.

Get yourself a mouse and keyboard if you can, the FPS's shouldn't be much I wouldn't think. Unreal, Quake and Outtrigger. Plus, once you have them, you can use the mouse for Silent Scope and the keyboard for Typing of the Dead. Man what a great system.

I just bought SOA for $64 off of ebay. I was surprised by the price, all the other sellers were asking $90 and up. Plus, I grabbed Sonic Adventure (disc only) because I only had the case and thieves stole my console with the game inside. And a VGA cable.

I was looking into Evolution but I don't know, despite the $15 price tag I'll watch some gameplay videos and decide. I just saw Lodoss War and I'll have to watch some videos too.

I really like the arcade games, like Crazy Taxi, I sunk in a good 3 hours last night playing that. I went into full nostalgia mode from back when I played it at Godfather's Pizza.

Yeah, Evolution 1 and 2 are easy to skip. Lodoss War plays like a Diablo, not turn based if that matters to you.

Crazy Taxi offers the quintessential SEGA arcade aesthetic. It's presentation is so timeless. I would argue that with the Dreamcast, console 3D graphics/fidelity finally became "good enough".

Rayman 2 is maybe the best, and Super Magnetic Neo is kind of unique. Kao the Kangeroo is very generic.

Never knew that, it seems backwards now. Maybe not that weird then though, when you were paying to include cars and fighter jets in your other games.
