Official October 2008 NPD Results

I hope the 250k in December guy is really joking.

There's no way that with more content and games out, it'd sell less than less year, and definitely not less by 70 percent.

Was MGS4 not the system seller? I don't see anything in the future even close to as big as that?

Hasn't the lowest-selling main Gran Turismo installment sold more than double the copies of MGS4?

I have no idea if GT drives hardware, though.

So we should expect LittleBigPlanet to do better in the November NPDs. But do we expect the actual console sales of the PS3 to actual increase to more than they would this month.

If it doesn't increase PS3 sales in US which is game will be the system seller for it so that ps3 sales are approachable to that of the 360s.

I can't think of any exclusive really to turn the tide now apart from LBP where are all Sony's family games hiding.

I don't know if it will do better. The hardcore that it's currently appealing to already ran out to buy it day one and there's little evidence to suggest that it's a crossover hit, so I would guess that it remains fairly flat or goes slightly down.

PS3 sales should be up around 50% over this month, depending upon Black Friday deals, though it doesn't look good for Sony since most of the sales that we know about are weighted heavily towards the 360.

I hate the term 'system seller' insofar that it's supposed to mean 'will reverse an ailing system's fortunes'.

It just doesn't happen.

The exception that proves the rule is Monster Hunter and the PSP in Japan.

Just a quick question... am I right in thinking that PS3 / 360 sales are just about equal YTD 2008?

Yes, but unless the PS3 does about 50% better than November 07 (which would be a HUGE month over month increase, but about on par for the YOY increase), they are going to lose about 400k ground to MS and probably close to a million to Nintendo next month.

Is there any reason to believe the PS3 November sales would increase >3x over October's numbers like they did last year when the price drop was just getting noticed?

So does this mean the killer game for the PS3 will be KillZone 2 even after the first game on the PS2 put a negative impression of it as a franchise to many people.

If thats not it I can't think of any software that could change the PS3s chances, unless its a slow seller what with Blu Ray.
Killzone 2 will sell 600k-700k in its first month and be MIA come March NPDs. Kinda like MGS4.

There's Gran Turismo 5, and I'd guess we'd get it in November or December in Japan. And then the March after that for NA and Europe. The thing is, that'd be in 2010. Five years into this generation. Kinda late and a bit hard to give the system a large, sustainable boost.

You mean on a worldwide basis?

I think WW PS3 is above 360.

For NPD, the numbers for this year is a virtual tie, with 360 in the lead by like fifty thousand units or something. Media Create Japanese sales has PS3 524k above 360 this year so it would all depend on Europe. If PS3 has a lead in Europe, then yes, but as long as PS3 is not greater than 500k or so less than 360 in Europe, it definitely has the lead. We don't have European sales, so who knows.

What in the world have you been doing for 20-25 hours in Wii Sports?!? I exhausted any single-player fun there was to be had in the first week, though it did last me a good year for multiplayer.
Boosting my scores, getting medals and then playing some more because it's fun.

The PS3 did 466,000 in Nov 2007. The 40GB unit was released and increased sales 4x over Oct 2007 and it was still the cheapest Blu-Ray player. I don`t see any way the PS3 sales more than 466,000 this Nov. I see it at around 400,000.

You mean like the "tight" controls in Lego series made the game a hit with casual/female audience?

Just because you can name an exception, doesn't mean that my point doesn't stand.

The Lego games are easy as hell to play even with the loose controls. I could see frustration in my girlfriend's face playing Little Big Planet that I didn't see when we played Lego Batman together.
Personally I think the loose controls in Little Big Planet work pretty well and I got used to them very quickly. I'm just saying what I noticed when I watched my girlfriend and my friend's girlfriend trying to play it.

No Monster Hunter release caused a bump that lasted. Here's PSP in 2007. It comes down from the holidays, spikes with Monster Hunter Portable 2, comes back down to ~30K/week, then spikes with PSP-2000 and reaches a new normal high that it's mostly kept.

At the moment I think that 360 is going to do better than Nov/Dec 07 results, I think that people are going to be spending a little bit less this Christmas and the Arcade's pricing should help the 360 grab a few more customers. They got 2.03 million sales over Nov/Dec last year, I think MS will be hoping for a slight improvement to ensure that 08 YTD > 07 YTD.

Wii is dependent on how much Nintendo can ship into the States, they have exceeded most people's expectations over the last two months so who knows what they have ready to ship. My guess is: A Lot.

PS3 is the unknown, last November it had the price drop/40gb launch and the honour of being the cheapest blu-ray player on the market to help sales. This year stand-alone players are a lot cheaper, and with no price drop on the horizon you have to wonder just how well the PS3 can do with a second Christmas at $399. PS3 is already past its 07 YTD number, I think if Sony can match last year's Nov/Dec performance I think they will be pretty happy. I don't think its about being No 1 anymore, its about turning a profit and maintaining a respectable market share.

I hate to say this, because I didn't really push my opinion out there very hard, but I really doubted Wii Music. (I'd feel better about saying 'I told you so' if it were actually impressive or dangerous that I'd done so. Being loud about it would have helped that slightly.)

It just doesn't have the same appeal as the others do. At least in North America. There's a reason Wii Sports was a pack-in in North America and not Japan.

Now, why it did so poorly in Japan... that's a whole new question.

Aside from getting into gameplay issues, I think its pretty simple- Wii Music was priced too high.

Look at the other hits Nintendo has had that seem to be appealing to more of a mainstream consumer:

Wii Sports, pack in for U.S/Europe, budget priced game in Japan

Wii Play- 50 dollars, but get a controller

Wii Fit- 80 dollars, but with the Balance Board

Mario Kart Wii- 50 dollars, get the Wheel.

I really think that for this audience, Wii Music just doesn't seem like a good value proposition to them. They've somewhat been trained by Nintendo to almost expect some sort of piece of plastic when they buy one of these games- Wii Music is the first one to really stand on its own as a fifty dollar piece of software. I guess you can put Brain Age Academy in there too, and I think the same point stands- that would have done significantly better at a lower price point.

I think the baseline for a 'decent' PS3 November has to be at least 500k, 400k would be a bloodbath.

Looking back at November's sales in 07, it's scary how much Guitar Hero picked up, especially on PS2. I guess GHWT is more of a Christmas present purchase than a "rush out and buy day 1" purchase, it should probably double or triple it's LTD by the end of November.

Agreed, even if you trudge through the Wii Music thread itself you will see "if it was $29 I would have bought it" again and again. $50 was just seen as too much by the "core" gamers who would have run out to get it first week/month

Also I know amazon is no judge but its that high on the Amazon sales list because they offered a $20 gift card making the game basically $29.99

I think the same theory would hold true for Brain Age Wii, had it been $29 it most likely would have gotten to 1 million a lot sooner than it did

I know these aren't "Wii Something" games, but Mario Party 8, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, and WarioWare Smooth Moves come to mind as other games at the same price that found success aimed at a pretty broad audience.

True, though I would say that WarioWare and Mario Party have an established history making it easier to appeal to traditional Nintendo gamers.

Mario & Sonic is just an easy easy sell.

On the other hand, I know that in the case of Mario Party it was by and large the best-selling game in the franchise. I'm sure a fair chunk of its sales came from the usual Nintendo fans, but certainly there was more to it than that.

I consider myself a a big fan of Nintendo's big franchise games and I haven't owned an MP game ever.

I think your assertion is bullocks. MP appeals to a certain audience, but its certainly not the amorphous 'usual' Nintendo fan.

Last nintendo minute (IGN) said they now have 50% more available for US:

For this reason, since Wii launched in November 2006, we have ramped up production four times. Right now shipments in the Nintendo of America region are 50 percent above what they were this time last year.

http://wii.ign.com/articles/930/930467p1.html

It has nothing to do with lack of peripherals or the like. Wii Music bombed for the same reason Electroplankton did; cobbling together arrangements just doesn't seem to be people's cup of tea.

This isn't the type of game thst stays in your Wii: Fit, Sports, Mario Kart, Smash bros. and the like are titles that do that. They dominate game playing time. Wii Music is that type of title that you dick around with for a few hours then don't bother to play for weeks because you don't feel the inspiration.

Wasn't Uncharted uncharted in NPD charts?

Yes it never made it into the Top 10, possibly Top 20 but we never got specifics

I know these aren't "Wii Something" games, but Mario Party 8, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, and WarioWare Smooth Moves come to mind as other games at the same price that found success aimed at a pretty broad audience.

Mario and Sonic was an easy sell given the licenses and promotion blitz it got, but it also was on sale for much of Nov and Dec at $39.99, even dipping to $25 at both Best Buy and Target the week before Christmas

I would suspect if Wii Music were to get such a price cut it would sell more units then if they forcibly keep it at $49.99, especially as we get closer to Christmas and people are just buying a large selection of games to go under the tree

Uncharted doubled its sales from november to december. It did actually only about 100k in november.

It´s quite likely that retailers pushed it along with new hardware purchases.

WretchedTruman said:
yes, but its sales rose subsequent to its november launch. approx. 140K in November, as opposed to 280 something in December

But why would that be an indication of LBP sales? The time frame? If so, why Uncharted?

Strange, I remember everyone a GAF laughing when SEGA said the game would sell more than 4 million.

If that's true then they are doing a heck of a job.

Nintendo will never be a threat to windows. Nintendo has always taken a games first attitude. Well at least when it comes to the hardware they have. Nintendo is in this for the almighty dollar sign

The internet, weather, and news channels really make me wonder if this is the case

I fucking love Uncharted. Anyone know what the LTD numbers are? I really want Uncharted 2.

I don't expect LBP to do any better in Nov. It will probably match October sales or maybe go a bit over, but that will be because it is spread out over 5 weeks instead of almost a week's worth of initial sales.

It will probably settle around 700k-800k. Decent, not a bomb but not spectacular for something considered to be top tier either.

Of course sold might mean Sega sold to retail but not to consumers

sold as we think of it is around 5-6 1/2 million combined by now
