Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Game just released. Come on GmG, i need that key!

Ended up starting with Osvald, unaware that he was the scholar archetype. Everything feels very much the same as 1 minus a few new additions. We got limit break now, which was needed to add some variety to the combat. Music is great, story is serviceable so far. Looking forward to playing more tonight into the weekend.

They adopted the same system that you can view/skip additional recruited party members' stories and revisit them later in the inn, which is nice. Just picked up Throné, I like her a lot as expected. Basically a mix between Therion and Prim. So far the stories are very shallow, but I'm only in chapter 3 and roaming around recruiting, so I'm sure it gets more in-depth later. Voice acting is mostly good, but I can't help but wish for some contextual script lines. Like when I pickpocket some homeless little girl of her last slice of bread and Throné goes "heh heh heh!".

The dynamic lighting is really noticeable this time around. Maybe because I recently started playing games in HDR, so the colors really pop and the blacks are super black. Regardless, it looks great for what it is. Wouldn't kill them to give us slightly bigger sprites with more detail/pixels, but it's fine. I get that it's an aesthetics choice.

Just recruited my 3rd character, the dancer. This is very much like the first Octopath, for better or worse. If you told me it was a DLC expansion I'd believe you. Regardless, the stories are opening up a bit for me now, and getting more interesting. But the longer I play, the more I realize they changed VERY little about the game for the sequel. Not a bad thing, just an observation. The day/night skills are kinda annoying. It's more or less just extra backtracking for backtracking's sake. Now you have to go through each town twice to get all the items. And let's be honest, everybody is savescumming the low % steal items to get high powered gear early.

Can I jump into this if I've never played the first one? Is this one substantially better than the first?

I like the look of a lot more character's here than the first game. I have the first available to play on xbox game pass on PC if I need to play it though. I tried it originally on Switch and was enjoying it, but it never sunk its hooks into me.

Yes you can jump into this straight away. It's not linked to first game.

This game is more of the same as the original but better. So if liked the first, you will love this.

I had played the first one for around an hour.

In the sequel does new character just joined comments anything on the story or only the main guy you have selected yaps ?

I rather you make a tight story that only can get 3 party members till you finish the game and they all contribute to one another's story rather than 8 completely isolated characters with..you know jrpg-ness dialogues and writing.

Love the game so far, everything seems better. Been wanting this for so long, even played that tedious mobile game to hold me over until this came out.

Got my key finally, but also just got off a 16 hour shift at work. Well, with the long hours I have a 5 day vacation coming up next week. I'm excited to dig into this game though!

Any suggestions on which characters to start with or order to play?

I must admit, I'm a little disappointed to hear some of you all say that not much has changed from the first one, because I was left a bit wanting after that game. It's weird that they couldn't pull off the multiple story arcs better, when this year a remake of an SFC game did it better with Live A Live. That game was so fantastic and one of my favorites of last year.

The full game is even better. There is so much to do.

Having access to the secondary jobs also makes the combat even more fun. If anyone wants to know where to find these secondary jobs, see below:

You can hover over them to read a blurb about their backstories, just pick whichever you like. Remember, you can recruit them all in almost any order you want and view all of their chapter 1 stories either at the time of recruitment or later at any tavern.
Live A Live.
Man I have been waiting for that one to hit PC. wonder what's keeping them from doing it.

I can't figure out how to carry my progress from the demo over to the full game. Online it says there should be an option in the main menu, but I just have "New Game", "Continue" (doesn't do anything, greyed out), "Settings", and "Quit Game".

I still have the demo installed, and I can boot it up and see my save there. So weird, kinda frustrating. I guess I'll just have to replay the first few hours again.

For me the game asked to me if I want to use save file from the demo.

Great OT jshackles jshackles you should snag the OT threads for Sea of Stars and Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes. You clearly like RPGs and do a great job of highlighting their systems in your OT.

While I wasn't a huge fan of the OT1's story flow I appreciated it for what it brought to the table gameplay wise. Looking forward to #2

One of the highlights so far: the camera. It may sound silly, but the camera movements in the HD-2D settings give a real immersion.

In chapter 1 of Throne, the city takes on a whole new dimension.

I definitely agree I was blown away when I did her chapter, they really improved this aesthetics a lot.

I like the shallow depth of field too. Probably the only time you'll see me type that, but it works in this game, gives the cities a diorama feel.

How the hell are you supposed to know where to go after you finish a chapter? The game barely gives you any direction and you tend to wonder around aimlessly each time, not to mention the minimap is complete shit so you always have to pull up the world map to make sure you're going the right way.

Is the objective to just go to the areas where the othet party members are to recruit them all? In other words, do I need to do everyone's Chapter 1s before moving on to any Chapter 2s, etc?

My only issue with the game so far (outside of its seperate character structure but I'm giving it a chance despite that) is the total lack of direction after finishing a chapter. I know its not "cool" but i like being told where to go, preferably with an easily guided waypoint.

Nice to see near 17k people playing on Steam. See Japanese devs there IS a market for your games day one and not years later.

Just follow chapter order. Road Signs are your best friend. I usually do all the 1's then all the 2's etc. But there are optional hidden dungeons in there you need to seek out and explore.

The world map shows you specifically which town triggers the next section of each character's story quests. You can go around doing 1,1,1,1 then 2,2,2,2 for various characters, or go straight 1,2,3,4,5 for a character you really like. It's very open for a JRPG in that regard. It doesn't point you in any particular direction because you have all the options available to you essentially from the start.

Thanks guys. That's kinda what I've been doing but wasn't sure if I was doing it right, didn't feel natural to me.

How do I come across these hidden dungeons? I've ran into some dungeons that were above my level but worthless to explore cause I die in two hits. Are the dungeons tied to sidequests or do I just have to comb the map? And why do you see I NEED to seek them out? I'm guessing there's very useful equipment to be found? (As I remember reading equipment > level in this game).

I'm not very far in this game yet since I recruit all characters/do all of their stories simultaneously, but in the first game, some of the field dungeons were for specific quests (sometimes sidequests even), sometimes you just happen by the entrances while exploring the overworld. Most of them are usually significantly higher level than the areas they exist in though, so don't feel like you need to find them all at the beginning of the game. Mostly exploration looking for chests and grinding was how I found them in the first game.

*edit*

Not sure if any of you guys have tried it, but the game runs flawlessly on the Steam Deck. I've been having a good time switching back and forth from my gaming PC when my gf wants to watch something on the big screen, and it's been no less of an experience.

I started a run with the cleric but I am not feeling the story. It's not bad, just, it feels like I am playing the villain. Which is fine, but I wasn't in the mood for such a story. I feel like being prince charming, not a manipulative clergyman.

Aw, I love Temenos. Just did his chapter 2 last night. He's definitely a good guy, just has no problem coloring outside the lines to get things done. He kinda makes me think of what an atheist would be in their world. The gods obviously exist so you can't really deny that and there are definitely good people who are religious. But the organization is something to be wary and/or suspicious of; especially given the power it has. Doubt may sound blasphemous but it's really just him not accepting things as fact because he was told so. His relationship with Crick is fun!

I started as Castti and I'm kinda ready to get back to her story but it took a bit to get everyone and I'm doing chapters in order of recommended level. I gave her the Cleric subjob and she's like the ultimate support. I imagine she'd also do great with Scholar as well given she can use concoct to handle any SP problems. Though I've not found any other jobs except for Inventor so experimentation is minimal atm.

I beat the first game with zero grinding, its your choice if you want to grind but you never need to.
Yeah, I've seen this a lot, and I can say I did very little grinding in my 80 hours in Octopath. Agreed it may well be needed, but I did not do a lot of the optional caves and tombs or superbosses, or the optional postgame final dungeon superbosses. Maybe those require that?

Great OP jshackles jshackles !

I have 3 hopes for this game:
  • The characters interact with each other more often and more naturally
  • The OST is still a banger
  • The game isn't afraid to explore darker stories like Primrose's from the first game.
All three of your hopes are absolutely fulfilled, and more. So, worry not. It's a total refinement/ improvement on the first game.

I loved the first OT and I'm loving this one as well. I have nearly all the characters and I think they're all charming or appealing in their own ways. Osvald's Les Miserables opening is probably the one that was most compelling, but I thought everyone on the eastern continent in particular had really good tales.

The music is very very very very very very very very very very very awesome. Can't wait to play more.

Did a bunch of exploring after all chapter 1s and got a couple more secret jobs (only have one remaining now). Now started working on chapter 2s for all characters.

I like how they've changed things up with chapters. The crossed paths are also nice little quests. I am also loving the party banter. Some of it is pretty hilarious!

I quite liked Hikari's chapter 2. Other than that, Throne's and Temenos' story is getting interesting. Ochette is basically Pokémon so overall there is a nice variety in the stories.

Since I did a bunch of exploring earlier I'm a little over levelled for these chapter 2s as my party is around level 20-30. So I've been fleeing from enemy encounters to bring the level back in line. It's way to easy to level in this game and wish it gave you a "No Exp" option.

Overall, having a blast playing this and I wish that time would just stop so I could keep playing this and not worry about real life.

Just finished all of the chapter 1s finally, and went a little ahead in Osvald's story. Really a great game so far. It's funny, I ended up really liking all of the characters with maybe the exception of Partitio. I didn't expect that.
