Are we sure SMG is going to sell to the Wii crowd? If it sell MP3 numbers... I lose all faith in the game buying public.

Mario is in no way shape or form in Metroids tier, and i like Metroid but Mario is still a legitimate major franchise. Shitty Mario Sunshine still sold very well.

Anyone expecting Metroid like sales is just stupid. (I dont think those metroid like sales are that bad btw)

Wii 501K

PlayStation 3 119.4K
PS3 HEAVENLY SWORD SONY (CORP) 10 139K

Nintendo DS 495.8K
PlayStation Portable 284.5K
Ouch. 360 has become such a beast. Heavenly Sword got decimated. (Same thing happened here in Canada.)

Not a surprise at all, but I expected HS to do a bit better -- and Reggie's "everyone who buys Halo 3 already -had- a 360" is a little laughable now. Though, to be fair, his "it's not impacting us" comment seems accurate with yet another 500k for the Wii. 500k -despite- Halo 3... That's beastly, too.

PSP continues to do nicely, though, considering how impossible it felt at one time to even match a sliver of the DS -- let alone half.

I'm looking forward to PSP Slim and FFT numbers next month.

At this point I really believe Wii is "The Wii Sport machine" adapter in many homes, mixed with the Nintendo enthusiasts and multiconsole owners. The way it keeps selling is not normal for a console.

Flawless actuation for Bungie and Microsoft marketing department. Nothing more to say, a fantastic work in all fields.

And PS3, well, awful, a shame because is a really good piece of harware. Let´s see how it evolutes with the price cut.

I'm still a bit unsure as to why the wii gets so much praise sales wise over the 360 when the 360 has a far bigger attach rate and in the end the real money for all involved is in software not hardware sales.

a fad needn't by definition be short-lived -- part of the sense of 'fad' is popularity despite a lack of inherent worth. that describes wii pretty well.

I would very much like you to point me to a popular definition of 'fad' where this is the meaning, or even better, that the 'fad' theory as presented was ever meant to be inferred that way.

You know, people wonder why SSBB and Wii Fit were delayed. And I have a sneaking suspicion it's not because of the software. Rather, Nintendo knows that they're going to be heavily supply constrained, so there's no point in releasing those blockbuster games. They don't benefit from it.

Result: this holiday Nintendo will be supply constrained, 360 will continue its momentum and sell more for the rest of the year.

Next spring will be the next interesting time when you have WiiFit versus GTA4. The ultimate "traditional" game, versus the ultimate "non-game".

PS3's and 360's are bought mainly to stream porn, games are secondary

You sir have the right idea, the only person I know that has a PS3 uses it to watch anime fansubs and porn on the big screen.

At least he is using the PS3 for what is it meant to be used as.

Shitty marketing, more of a push for Blu Ray videos than games from Sony, shitty marketing.

The games just aren't appealing. I love my PS3 and my library will consist of: Resistance, HSG5 (import), PES08 (import). I'm not going to fault or condemn PS3 owners for not picking up Lair and HS.

Is there any way to get the Warhawk numbers from the online scoreboards? Curious what its actual numbers are.

It deserves far better than that :(

It's meh sales are kind of bizarre.

But you can't really take that as evidence of that...I mean MySims didn't really take off either.

I think it's more than likely a lot of Wii owners are just playing wii sports.

With Mass Effect coming next month.... Microsoft wins Next-Gen '07.

Not in my opinion 2007 will be determined by total sales for the year. Microsoft is not gonna win that race at this pace. The Wii looks to win 2007 with total sales. Especially if you include all territories worldwide.

so are people comparing Mario games to your standard Wii title ? Mario games have the knack to sit on the charts for not months but years.

Xbox 360 and Halo 3 Blow Away the Competition as Industry Sales Skyrocket 74% - NPD

Wow, what a month - total sales hit $1.36 billion as Master Chief led the charge. The Xbox 360 managed to top all, but the Wii still had its second best month ever and the DS and Zelda also fared quite well. NPD analyst Anita Frazier remains very bullish on 2007 and she thinks Xbox 360 will carry its momentum throughout the holidays.

GameDaily BIZ has received the September sales data from The NPD Group, and the impact from Halo 3 could probably be felt around the world. Total video game sales rose to $1.36 billion for the month (a 74 percent increase), led largely by a dominating performance from Halo 3 sales and Xbox 360 hardware sales.

The three SKUs of Halo 3 (standard, limited edition, legendary edition) combined to sell 3.3 million units during the NPD reporting period. This had a great effect on Xbox 360 hardware adoption as sales for Microsoft's console topped all platforms at 527.8K units.

Nintendo's Wii, despite not really having any significant new software releases, was close behind with 501K units sold. The DS handheld also did quite well, selling another 495.8K. Looking at Sony's platforms, the PS3 sold just 119.4K units, while the surging PSP sold 284.5K and the PS2 maintained healthy sales at 215K. At the bottom of the pack, the old GBA sold 75K units.

Although Halo 3 almost single-handedly raised the console software sales total 64 percent to $550.5 million, console hardware sales saw the most growth, rising 188 percent to $418.6 million. Furthermore, year-to-date console hardware is tracking ahead 118 percent. On the portable side, portable software sales declined six percent to $103.1 million, while portable hardware climbed 28 percent to $126.25 million. Finally, video game accessories saw some nice growth, rising 76 percent to $157 million.

All in all, total video game industry sales now stand at $9.37 billion (up 47 percent), and 2007 will undoubtedly smash all previous records.

Here are the top ten selling games for September (ranked by units):

Halo 3 (all three SKUs)—Xbox 360—Microsoft—3.3 million

Wii Play w/ remote—Wii—Nintendo—282K

Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass—DS—Nintendo—224K

Madden NFL 08—PS2—EA—205K

Skate—Xbox 360—EA—175K

Madden NFL 08—360—EA—173K

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption—Wii—Nintendo—167K

BioShock—Xbox 360—Take-Two—150K

Brain Age 2: More Training in Minutes a Day—DS—Nintendo—141K

Heavenly Sword—PS3—Sony—139K

After receiving the data GameDaily BIZ got in touch with the NPD's industry analyst Anita Frazier.

Frazier confirmed what Microsoft has been saying since the launch of Halo 3: it had a dramatic impact on console sales. "Halo 3 had a very big and significant impact on 360 hardware sales. Consumers always tell us that the availability of the games they want to play is the #1 reason why they purchase any given hardware system, and when you have a game of this magnitude, the effect of compelling content on driving hardware acquisition is evident," she said.

Frazier also thinks that Microsoft will bring this momentum into the all-important holiday season. "We should continue to see strong sales for Halo 3 into the holidays and that will definitely help keep the momentum going for the 360. Not only that, but those new owners are going to be looking for some more content to play so it's a cycle that feeds itself," she explained. "A growing install base is always a good thing for the platform ecosystem. There is so much going right in the industry at the moment that I think we're going to see very strong results from a multitude of platforms."

We were a bit surprised to see the Wii sell as many units as it did given the lack of new software in September, but Frazier thinks that the constrained supply leading up to September had a lot to do with it. "I think we're seeing the results of a backlog in fulfilling demand. Nintendo has said that they're ramping up production but that consumers should act and purchase a Wii when they find them at retail because the demand is still outpacing supply. I think we're seeing this come into play now. So while I wasn't surprised by the number, it's an impressive number nonetheless in the face of all the Halo buzz this past month," she said.

One area of the industry that disappointed some was portable sales. Frazier expects the portable sector to pick up a bit as we head towards the holidays. "I think some will be surprised at the portable software decrease compared against last September but it's still up 2% in unit sales and 23% on a year-to-date basis. I just think the focus was elsewhere this past month and there are sure to be a lot of portable games sold this upcoming holiday - the price of portable games is great for gift-giving," she noted.

She also confirmed that the new PSP slim model helped to boost Sony's portable: "The Daxter bundle was the biggest contributor to overall PSP sales and it will be really interesting to watch how these new PSP programs will ultimately impact the overall sales of the platform."

Last month, Frazier told us that 2007 could see a whopping $18 billion in total industry sales. With September racking up such high numbers, should we expect even better by year's end? "I still think the $18B is a good number looking at where sales are at right now. That would still mean a 45% increase for the industry once full year sales are in, and that is certainly an impressive increase from one year to the next," she said.

In a separate note to media, she added, "Although we've been confident for many months now that the industry was poised to realize it's best year ever in terms of revenue, the results in recent months makes me even more bullish."

Typically a "hardcore gamer" who has an HDTV would have both XBOX 360 and a PS3 under the TV, so odds are that when XBOX 360 has a hot selling game, it pulls sales away from the PS3. Expect a simlar thing if the PS3 has a killer FPS game to come along.

I think the PS3 does suffer because of this, I bought a 360 while I was waiting for the PS3 to come out in the UK, but now I dont see any need to buy a PS3 as originally planned, i'm sure there are gamers out there who have both consoles but buy 360 games because of achievements and their full friends list

Pretty much. This is also exacerbated when multiplatform releases end up better on 360...360 version gets all the sales.

which is sad, because basically people are paying 250 dollars for wii sports only. that's really not a bargain.

Even if it doesn;t sell to the Wii crowd, it sure as hell will sell to the TP crowd, which numbers in the 2M+ range at the very least. And people who haven;t bought a Wii because of massive supply constraints.

Yeah, but isn't that really how a fad works? Fads tend to have massive sales for a period of time and then suddenly drop off. That may or may not be the actual case with the Wii, but we won't really know if it's a fad or not until we see something like that happen.

But really, Sony...yeesh.

The Playstation family is still fairly strong once you total them all up together, though.

The real travesty here is Heavenly Sword. :\
Nintendo family is even stronger then the Playstation Family

the power of wii sports, but your right

For a console that has been selling strong month-to-month, it has pathetic software sales.

fad |fad|
noun
an intense and widely-shared enthusiasm for something, esp. one that is short-lived and without basis in the object's qualities; a craze

oxford american dictionary

the wii fad doesn't look very 'short-lived,' but its superabundance of 'without basis in the object's qualities' might compensate

I'm just trying to lower expectations, we still don't know who exactly are buying the Wiis and what games they like. But if, just if, SMG somehow disappoints, it would be like the sky falling down on neogaf.

Mario was an icon. I think he has a better chance of selling to the casuals than Samus, personally.

You're talking to a blithering demagoguery machine. Pointing out the truth has no effect on such existences.

Good numbers for MS and Nintendo. It'd be nice if the next price cut for PS3 actually bumped sales significantly so we could have some real competition.

Nooo....

Given the market Wii's selling to, SMG will cream MP3. I mean, I'm willing to believe most of the Wii-ownership doesn't realize Metroid's a girl, but I expect the vast majority know Mario's a fat red plumber with a green brother. It's an entirely different league.

That may be. I think that Live and its community awareness is a HUGE reason for X360 seeing much better sales of software. That's free marketing...real word of mouth...all working for anyone who sells software for X360.

Halo 3 did amazingly well in SW and some good numbers below that for some things.

Not fucking 3.3 million excellent. And certainly not 20X better than MP3 excellent, if one goes by the sale.

Fucking Nintendo should be ashamed of themselves- sabotaging potential MP3 sales by being so goddamned stingy on the almost non-existant advertising.
