That awkward phase sucks, I shaved my head in December and have been letting my hair grow since then. Now its starting to look nice, got it parted in the middle and its totally different then any style I use to have. Definitely worth it when you push through that phase.

Does anyone have any advice with dealing with very thick hair? I want to grow it out long but it seems neigh impossible as it's so thick, it doesn't really grow down vertical but just grows bigger as a mass on top of my head, think Marge SImpson's hair. Is there a particular cut I can get to help it grow long or shampoo?

This is the phase I always get to and end up quitting and getting my normal boring hair cut.
Same here, it looked horrible in that phase when I was out in public as when the wind blew it just looked crazy and when inside it kind of had that high school shag look. I guess it helps that I've been indoors a lot this year, I dont know if I could've made it if I was being super social. I might just keep it at the length it is now and not go too much longer, washing and drying is a pain in the ass, that's my only complaint really.

Sign me up as someone else who has always had short hair but has decided to grow it out for a completely different style.
Been a while since my last cut.
Started wearing a cap recently to hide the mess so I can grow it longer.
That doesn't look awkward at all, and your hair isn't even that long. I would still consider that a "short" style.

I normally have a 1 on the side and then real short on top, to me it's very long.
Ok so I combed my hair slick back after a shower and noticed it looked pretty damn good, really made it look thick too and also more professional. Now it would be a long slicked back style, so I'm wondering what kind of product should I go for. I'm thinking of American Crew firm hold, would this be right? Or a pomade? Both I would imagine would make it look ever thicker, but I already have pretty thick hair so idk.

Not even 30 and my hair is thinning to the degree that I don't see any saving it.
So I decided to trim it, which in hindsight feels like a good idea. You dont notice the thinning as much now I think.
I started noticing it this spring, but i had a kickass undercut going and didn't want to loose it (undercuts are one of the greatest hairstyles ever conceived, thanks Ralph Fiennes.) Anyways, I also dont really want to acknowledge the lack of hair I have - say ordinary narcisissm I guess - so the only real reason I did it today, was that I found a really nice cap to wear instead of nothing.

Well I went ahead and got some smaller sizes of American crew - a lighter hold, firm hold, and pomade, so I'll see how those go.
@Obin it looks better shaved down, you look like someone who would rock the shaved head well. Ever though of going all the way with the bic?

I have actually. I'm a bit apprehensive about it still, my thinking is this - I know the hair is going to get even thinner as I get older, and when I have a complete bald spot on the top of my head, I'll remove it all. I'm not gonna go around having a "half rim" (is that what you call it? I can't find the real haircut name for it) of hair on my head. Barbers have said to me that I can keep it as is for a couple of more years before it'll get worse, and I'm probably gonna follow their sayings.

I understand, I'm probably gonna have to face that inevitability eventually, maybe I'll get on that finasteride though, but yeah all the males in my family have had signifcant hair loss early/mids 20s except me. Shaving it down probably is pretty nerve wracking the first time you do it. I'd imagine if you fully shaved the 'caesar crown' shadow probably would be barely visible, maybe only at night when its been 10+ hours after you shaved. I've just noticed bald athletes that shave all the way down look pretty damn good regardless.
But still it looks better shorter definitely. Hell you could probably thicken it up some if you went and started propecia, but that's always a risk and if you're fine without it theres no need.
Right now my hairline is fine and thick, but I can't tell if the way I have my hair parted down the middle is making it seem thinner in the back. Its not really noticeable, but it just seems like its thin down to my neck right where I part my hair, so it could be that causing it. Although my uncle had a bald spot near there so idk.. try to style it nice while I have some ya know. And I guess if I had to go bald, losing it slowly on the top is probably better since I'm taller anyways lol.
I do wonder how big a role of ketoconzole shampoos and adenosine containing shampoos have... maybe its an individual response type of thing, it seems to work well to me.

This is the THIRD TIME I change hairdresser/barber this year. Can no one cut my hair properly on this planet? I'm not talking about a bad looking style, but rather outright fucking up. I can see clipper lines, and there is what looks like an aborted fade all around. They all make me look like an onion, but I tell them every time "short on the sides and back, but don't make it short too high or I'll look like an onion". Then they cut it too high. But that's not the worst, the worst is it looking like an idiot cut it.
I used to just shave my head, but I don't want to since it's not really nice, girls don't like it, I don't like it, even if it's easy to do. I just want a damn normal haircut! Everyone who cuts hair here sucks! I don't get it!
I'll try to get it fixed some other place tomorrow. If that one doesn't work I don't know what to do anymore.

Well I've booked myself in with a stylist at a local salon to get a new cut, hair is long enough hopefully to restyle it or work towards something based on what he says.

Thanks, the woman doing it took a good hour on it. Its costs £30 but the people there do it really well.
I usually get a 0.5 up to 2, last time the dude razored the lowest part of the nape (?) and went up from there, this time I said it and I think the woman thought I said I get a 0-2.
Once she started going at it i was abit like "oh fuck she misunderstood" but actually I much prefer it this way!
Where do you get yours done? My guy upped his prices to like £35 recently, and I've moved so it's effort to get to him too.

Sweet, was really hoping it'd be in London. Will give them a go for my next cut. Glad they do fadework cause I tend to go a few months between real cuts and just get the sides tidied in the other months.
Only thing I'll hugely miss about my current guys is the private rooms.

Does Hair-GAF approve of the cut I just got today? Been sticking with the same style for the past couple of years. The girlfriend likes it so I try not to stray to far from a slicked-back look.

How awful are braids in a guy?, i ask this because my pro debut is coming up. And my hair is longish and obscures my vision, so maybe braids would be the way to go?, solely for the fight. I don't like braids... but i don't want to cut my hair!

Looks like high grade 1 , then just cut short ontop. You would have to specificity ask for a really high cut and say to the hair line.
If you look at the bottom left pic of mine, that is Razor (0) up in stages till a 2 which is when it gets dark.

Yea, my thoughts exactly. Individually remix the haircut to suit you, rather than doing the copy pasta version. Unfortunately, you'll have to design the haircut yourself most of the time... and finding what looks good for you takes trial and error.
My next version will slowly fade/taper a 3 at top and go down to a 1.5 at bottom into my beard. And I regret cutting the front as short as I did.

GAF, I need some advice. I have thick, dark hair that I've been growing out recently, and the newfound length is beginning to necessitate a change in style. As it stands now, I let it go mostly unruly, taming it mostly with my hands. That said, my hair type is such that, despite the length, it tends to "poof out" when it dries, instead of doing what I want it to. On top of that, the length is making this more and more difficult.
I'd like to turn to some basic product to style it how I want it. I'm to the point where I can pull it back into a basic ponytail, but I'd also like to be able to slick it back as well. Any advice or recommendations for slicking back thick (to the point of "poofiness") hair?

How long is it? Do you have pictures?
I am pretty unhappy with my last haircut. I brought pictures to describe the sort of undercut I want, and I ended up getting a very cut and paste shaved sides thing with an okay fade. She missed a lot of hair too, which is embarrassing.

At work so can't do pictures at the moment, but I'd say around six inches or more, maybe...? I can pull it over my face down to my chin, more or less.
EDIT: In lieu of photographs, think Aaron Taylor-Johnson (when he had long hair), but less curly. Also, not as cool.
So I just got approved for a topical prescription that is 5% minoxidil and includes .1% finasteride and has a few other ingredients. Should be interesting..as long as it maintains while thickening up along the temple I'll have some nice locks for awhile. The earlier you start a finasteride treatment the better the results right?
