That is possible yes, though they do still have that option.
Yeah, I think some took the smartphone port announcements as a sign of transition away from or in place of dedicated game systems bit I don't think that's the case. They seem comparably low budget compared to what the previous conversions and remakes entailed and I still think we could see a higher effort version of VIII for 3DS or it's successor.

Oh and re:Sega I feel I should mention they were unhappy with their results and aren't super optimistic about this year either.

They've also decided to switch toward even more digital revenue due to this.

Most publishers are relatively happy this go around so it sticks out.

By the way, is there some first-day sellthrough data this week (was there any release at all this Thursday?). Comgnet numbers?

I have to admit, it's kinda funny that the MC thread for GW ended up with barely 7 pages.

This week, Famitsu put the 3DS ahead of the Gameboy Advance.:

3DS: 15.539.478
GBA final: 15.527.291

Nintendo shipments:

GBA final: 16.960.000
3DS: 15.890.000

No releases this week.
Until Mario Kart 8 there's almost nothing we can comment, except for Japan Doomed.

I guess next week is the PS4 sub 10k week. So maybe more movement will be seen lol

What is the reason for the big difference between Famitsu final GBA number and Nintendo's shipment number?

That's units sold verses shipments. Famitsu's numbers aren't shipments. Obviously not all of the advance shipment sold. Maybe they moved it to another region.

Yeah but I really doubt there's 1.4 millions GBA sitting on shelves or in some warehouse somewhere in Japan. Most likely Famitsu undertracked the GBA.

This is the slowest period of the year for games sales. Golden Week isn't that big, so it's understandable the threads slow down considerably too during that time.

The MK8 week will probably be huge, wether or not the game does well.

thanks for the laugh
just for contrast, nintendo sold something like 385,000 hardware units in golden week 2007.

Sure, i know that, but the difference is huge, about 1.4 million in difference like Alrus mentioned. I dont think that Nintendo overshipped 1.4 million in Japan and had to reallocate them later on.

No releases at all? Well damn. Post GW week is always brutal, but since the whole market has been in a kind of slump since the start of the year + no release at all = ouch. It won't be pretty, especially if PS4 drops below 10k (something I could totally see happening).

And yeah, GW isn't nearly as big as it used to be in the past. Last year was already pretty meh, but this year it was even worse. Except YW, and the usual rise for Nintendo software, it was all pretty weak.

What was the final numbers for GBA in MC?

But yeah, kinda interesting that the 3DS has surpasse the GBA because :

1) GBA had virtually no competition at all.
2) 3DS has much more competition... Vita may not be much of a threat (compared to the PSP), but mobile platforms are (which is why I really don't understand why people would say Nintendo wouldn't have any competitors in the handheld space if Sony doesn't replace the Vita... that's actually the opposite, competition would be even fiercer than ever).

So all in all, I find the 3DS's performance pretty good. The drop from DS is quite clear, but for the most part, it seems to be because of casuals going away.

Handheld next-gen is gonna pretty interesting.

Maybe shipment figure includes some Asian countries ?

I doubt it, it'd fall in the 'Other' categories (besides Japan and North America), same as Europe. I don't remember Nintendo ever putting anything else under 'Japan'. Then again, maybe Aquamarine or another sales-ager could tell us more about this discrepancy.

cw_sasuke

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
GBA had competition because the home console market was still major with the PS2 securing most 3rd party support. 3DS has more mobile competition, but thats all there is anyway. Homeconsoles are performing like shit - it'll be years until if we get another new one with an installed base of more than 10 million.

Years, how do they work.
I'm not sure I follow.
It's May. General sales decline is expected and completely natural as we enter the summer months. September/Octoberish they rise again.
We have a decade or more of real-world data to back this up, it's always the same. Summers are slow for hardware. Holidays are awesome. Fall and spring are somewhere in between. It's an axiom.

And yet, every single time, starting April or so people look at the numbers, note a decline from previous weeks, and proclaim assorted market deaths, uh-ohs, doomtrains and so forth.

My failure is that I am too lazy to distill this historical precedent into an obvious, clear and easy to post single-image. I've thought about it many times, but if I do it I want to do it right. The question how to mix 52-week years with 53-week years is keeping me awake at night, not to mention the scraping of all the raw data in the first place.

As a bandaid, I point to the YTD hardware sales. But with the 700k+ hole the 3DS has torn into this year's total hardware, even that will require some additional debate to make a decent point.

Monster Hunter Smart is their iOS game for one handed play.

It had a bunch of floor space advertising at TGS and is targeted for later this year.

Edit:

Since we're on this note, Capcom had these slides up for their mobile and PC online plans:

How long until we get Resident Evil on smartphones?

Yikes.

And to make matters worse, unlike the Western markets that are seeing a reversal of the cyclical downturn, there's really nothing on the horizon to turn these declines around.

So not only have smartphones and tablets completely overtaken feature phones, but a MUCH bigger share of the market is playing exclusively on phones and tablets?

That's...actually a lot more worrying than just raw sales numbers. It sounds like people are just swearing off dedicated gaming devices entirely, handheld or no.

In case anyone is curious why Japanese publishers insist on focusing on mobile, take this and combine it with the complete collapse of Japanese publisher market share in the West.

Media Create Sales: Week 17, 2011 (Apr 25 - May 1)

Looking back at those numbers, I'm now 100% convinced the casual boom of the Wii/DS is pretty much the main (sole?) reason GW is usually described a pretty big deal... whereas it just seems to have roughly the same effect as any other holiday.

Here's the exact Sega quote about converting more of their series to digital:

Sega said:
The packaged game software field in the consumer business will continue to undergo rationalization, in an effort
to establish a structure that can consistently generate profit. We will also push forth with the digital conversion of
existing package IPs.
For the fiscal year ending March 31, 2015, estimated total volume of packaged software
sales is 12,780 thousand copies, including 4,540 thousand copies in the U.S., 4,890 thousand in Europe and 3,340
thousand in Japan.

In the digital game software field, together with continuing operations of our major online service “PHANTASY
STAR ONLINE 2,” we will also strengthen our work on service for smartphones and tablet PCs. For the fiscal
year ending March 31, 2015, the Group plans to introduce 43 new titles domestically (including 13 Pay-to-play
types and 30 Free-to-play types) in the digital game software field.

Random question, but which do you guys think will sell more in Japan? Persona 5 or Tales of Zestiria? No Persona game has touched Xillia 1 or 2 sales (600k+) and I think Zestiria has a shot at 450-500k+ (I'm not sure if it'll reach Xillia 2 sales). On the other hand P5 has a lot of build up behind it it with all the cross media promotion for the other games and lots of other Persona games and ports.

P5 is also #1 in Famitsu's Most Wanted list (also Last Remnant refuses to drop lol). FMW isn't the best metric for sales (Persona Q is two spots above Zestiria but I think everyone would agree Zestiria is going to sell more), but it's still interesting.

01/01. [PS3] Persona 5 (Atlus, Winter 2014) – 678 votes
02/05. [Wii U] Mario Kart 8 (Nintendo, 05/29/14) – 614 votes
03/02. [3DS] Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (Capcom, Fall 2014) – 607 votes
04/04. [3DS] Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth (Atlus, 06/05/14) – 578 votes
05/03. [PS4] Final Fantasy XV (Square Enix, TBA) – 576 votes

07/06. [PS4] Kingdom Hearts III (Square Enix, TBA) – 366 votes
08/11. [PSV] Freedom Wars (SCEJ, 06/26/14) – 339 votes

i feel like persona would sell more than tales in the west but tales will beat it in japan.

Tip: Never look at Famitsu's most wanted as a barometer for sales.

EDIT: Tip to myself: I should learn to read the whole post carefully lol.

Persona 5 will probably be around 300k, whereas Tales of Zestiria will probably be 500k.

P4 sold ~295k according to Garaph and Golden sold ~230k. I really doubt P5 will only sell 300k. That would exhibit little growth. I think P5 will sell 400k at least.

Edit: Wait I forgot Golden shipped 350k. But point stands anyway.

Golden apparently did 350k when you combine shipped+digital sales, not like you can channel stuff a Vita game either, even in Japan.

edit: also the best version of P4 did like 40k I think.

Yeah I forgot about that. 400k for P5 might be a low end number then.

You know what, I actually wouldn't be surprised if P5 did tales numbers, they have been on a massive media blitz this year, 3 P3 movies, 1 dancing game, 1 fighting game, 1 3DS game and another freaking anime. Not to mention that Persona has grown a lot.

I'm gonna say Persona.
I think Tales of Zestiria will suffer from its yearly releases. We've already seen a decline for Xillia 2 and Symphonia HD compilation, and i'm sure first Xillia numbers are unreachable now.

In the other side, a main Persona game has been long awaited, and the fanbase is growing everyday. I can perfectly see the game reaching the 500k mark.

I think Persona 4 Golden could've largely been the same audience, as was the case with Project Diva.
Other PS3 franchises have suffered due to the system's long life, so I don't think 300k is too crazy.

Definitely, a chink of the audience is there but I don't think they are that dedicated. There are definitely fans out there who don't own a Vita and the movies, anime and 3DS game will definitely bring some people in.

I'm expecting somewhere around 450k for Persona 5.

I'm not expecting Zesteria to sell Xillia numbers, but Xillia 2 and Symphonia HD selling less were expected.

Definitely, a chink of the audience is there but I don't think they are that dedicated. There are definitely fans out there who don't own a Vita and the movies, anime and 3DS game will definitely bring some people in.

I really feel that all of that stuff only appeals to people who are already into the series. I don't see the games bringing in new people, while the movies and anime are basically targeting the exact same people who watched the first anime and they're the reason why the Vita game did so well.

What are you comparing ToS HD numbers to? I think it's a good thing for Zestiria that the "major" Tales release for 2013 was just ToS HD. Xillia 2 released late 2012, while Zestiria is going to release late 2014. That's 2 years or so between mothership titles.

I think Persona 4 Golden could've largely been the same audience, as was the case with Project Diva.
Other PS3 franchises have suffered due to the system's long life, so I don't think 300k is too crazy.

A lot of people have been waiting for P5, and probably another Atlus console game in general (despite mobiles/handhelds taking over), so I don't think it's worth comparing it to other franchises. There are no other Megaten games on PS3 (unfortunately).

Also I find it kinda interesting that P4D doesn't appear on Famitsu's Most Wanted at all. I guess Famitsu readership isn't geared to dancing titles, even if it's Persona, though I think it'll sell fine regardless.

Said this a million times before but SMT IV could have done some significant numbers on PS3, not saying that the 3DS numbers weren't good though.

The issue I have with P4D is that its a Project Diva game that doesn't feature the very reasons why the series is popular.

A lot of the brand strength is also specifically centered around Persona 4 and its characters as well, rather than the franchise as a whole.
So I'm just not expecting the level of growth that most of you guys are.

Anyone know how well the P3 movie did?

Even if a lot of people are attached P4 characters, I think many of those people will be looking forward to P5 regardless.
