The height from the Dark Rock should still clear that heatsink. At worst, like GHG GHG stated, you can just remove the Gigabyte heatsink cover and purchase a generic one off Amazon. I bought one two years ago for like $8 and its served me well and keeps my SSD cool.

DDR4 is super cheap, so it'll be ready for you when you upgrade. That 5700x will be a great choice and a fun time for you, too. I'm currently running Corsair Dominator Ram 4x8 at 3200MHz.
Yeah, I got the DDR4 already, my gf got it for my birthday (today). Just dropped it in, just in time to start editing a new video.

I have one question, what should i use to keep the gpu in place given the high weight? the support in the fractal design case or the one that comes with the gpu? or both?

I don't really want for my gpu to sag like old tits.

Here you can see the one in the case

doesn't matter what one you use.

if the card sags its because it's designed to. well maybe they didnt design it to sag but they also didn't design it not sag. they decided fuck it use cheap materials and/or go overboard with the heat sink and throw in a support bracket and call it quits.

nvidia founder cards 2000-4000 cards dont move once you screw them in. they are built with solid pieces of metal and not cheap bits of plastic like AIBs. even cards like the 3090-4090 don't sag. my 4080 is perfectly level and doesn't need a bracket. that thing is huge and heavy. i think the only plastic parts are the fans and the backplate cover.

That left me more confuse than i was before...
There are hundreds of GPU support brackets you can use. I'd just say search on Amazon, find one you like and get that. Prices range from $5 - $105 depending on what you get. I have one of these, but I never used it since my reference 6800 XT didn't need it.

But i have already 2, the one in the case and the one that comes with the gpu, my question is, can i use one or both?

I'm pretty noob with this shit so i don't have enough knowledge to like or chose one over another one, i just don't want my gpu to sag like the titanic.

Not sure if you can use both, don't know their orientations. But, one is pretty sufficient enough. I'd just say use whichever one is more aesthetically pleasing to you.

I'm gonna let chose the dude who is gonna build the pc what to use, i don't care about aesthetic in a pc.

I'm still running a 2060 and i5 10400f with 16 GB RAM playing at 1440p, and while it can cope with everything I throw it at as far as maintaining playable frame rates, I understand that it is now well behind the power curve and I am going to start thinking about getting a new GPU this year.

I suspect I'll grab a 30 series, though I'm slightly worried I'll be restricted by my CPU.

The i5 10400f is 6c 12t and it can do what I ask at the moment, but it obviously won't as time goes on.

I'm also wondering whether 16 GB RAM is going to be enough in the next few years.

It's not something I'm mega fussed about, as I could have bought a new card last year but the market seemed in a state of flux, with the new cards being announced and/or released, and I ended up getting a ps5 as I wanted to play GT7, GoW Ragnarok, Spiderman etc...

Money is not the biggest problem, though I'm not ashamed to admit I've had a lot of overheads this year and what with price increases for daily living expenses, and a change in my priorities and available free time, I don't know if I can justify spending £7-8-900 plus on something for my gaming hobby.

PC gaming can, as some are fully aware, become a real money hole as you get sucked into the hardware arms race of new this and new that.

For instance, I'd really like to buy a much better quality monitor if I do upgrade to a significantly stronger GPU/CPU combination, as I think it'll do the increase in hardware power a lot more justice than my current entry level 1440/144 monitor.

Then again, is this just unnecessary and a distraction?

Any word on the zen 4 version of 3dv-cache CPU coming out? Waiting to upgrade my X58 i7 5675 build. Already got a 3090 in it but can’t do much with that bottleneck

CES. AMD are doing their conference on the 9th i think. of course that will just be a paper launch. don't know when they'll be in stores.

i got a 7700X but will be getting a 7700/7800X3D

I'd say if it is doing everything you want it to do right now, don't fuss about upgrading just because. When your PC no longer works to the standard you like, then and only then should you upgrade. Or if you find a can't miss deal, then I'd totally understand grabbing something. But a lot of us get that FOMO and just start burning money for no reason, myself included. I was perfectly fine with my 3060 Ti, but I'd never owned an AMD gpu AND I wanted to finally grab something in the "high-end", so I bought the 6800 XT. I plan to run this thing into the ground until I can't no mo!

yey my new cpu, ram, and ssd are out for delivery. should be here in the next 2 hours. motherboard came yesterday.

going to need to find the time to take my PC apart and rebuild it. might be able to do it tomorrow if i can leave work early. if not then it'll be either saturday or sunday. i had the option to get it all delivered on saturday so i'd have had all of sunday to tuesday to fuck about with it but nah i hesitated.

i can take apart and build a PC no problem but i feel like i've been doing it a lot recently. only a few months ago i done a clean install of linux + windows which required pulling out my cpu cooler/gpu/ssds. a couple weeks ago put a new GPU and PSU and had to do another clean install of windows and remove linux. the GPU was easy enough to put in but doing all the PSU cables was a pain. now i need to take everything out, redo all my cable management, and another install of windows :messenger_weary:

i swear i will cry if anything goes wrong with these new parts and i need to pull shit apart again or reinstall windows lol.

Good stuff, what are you going to play first?

Yes, it's still doing what I need in the sense it runs everything that's currently out there, though obviously not at ultra settings etc...

It's always a balancing act between performance, resolution, and settings, isn't it?

Because, I play at 1440p and because I like to try and play at 80-90+ where possible, I'm more likely to lower settings than accept the lower frame rate, and dropping to 1080p is out of the question.

I suppose, if I think about it, any new GPU would simply be so I could play at ultra/high rather than a mix of high and medium...and I'm not sure I'm that bothered, and as I said I'd like to improve the quality of my monitor in that case.

so.... :messenger_unamused:

my cpu (7700X), ram, and ssd came! fuck it i thought i'll get started building the PC today! took everything out and put in the new parts.

first issue: one of the M.2 heat sink screws is stripped on my motherboard (gigabyte b650e master). i literally unscrewed it once to remove the heat sink and tried screwing it back in once i put my drive in. the thing is spinning. i didn't even try tightening it too much! so now it wobbles a little as its only being held on by one screw.

second issue: the fucking m.2 heat sink being so huge i couldn't get my cpu fan in. the fan has to come out to access the screws to mount it. when mounted i can't reach the screws of the m.2 heat sink. if i took the cooler off and removed the heat sink i wouldn't be able to get the heat sink back on. the only solution was to completely unplug everything from the motherboard, unscrew it, and take it out the case. then i could slide the fan in from the top.

honestly? not a huge deal. i can get all stand off screws out and in quickly. plus i know where all the cables go and plugging in the cpu power cables is so much easier than on my other board.

third issue: when i first booted it up the BIOS said something like CPU has been swapped and i need to reset the BIOS. also there was something about secure boot and having the reset keys? starting to think this board might be second hand... but i don't know. suppose this isn't really an issue unless...it is second hand!

fourth issue: tried installing windows and when it rebooted after doing the install from USB ... well it didn't reboot at all. it got stuck on some error code (which i couldn't find in the manual) and my screen was blank. powered off and booted up again but still nothing.

reset the BIOS and booted back into the windows usb and reinstalled windows again. this time after rebooting it took me to the proper installation. it asked me to name my PC so did that and then it rebooted and stuck on a blank screen. powered off and tried again which worked so i actually got windows installed!

downloaded windows updates and asked me to reboot. guess what happened? yup stuck on a never ending black screen. when i got it to turn back on it took me to a windows recovery screen.

OK maybe it's the BIOS that needs updated. finally managed to get back into windows. put the BIOS onto the USB. BIOS said it had to reboot. well shit, i know where this is going! yup the fucking thing got stuck again. got back into the BIOS and it finished updating.

now i'm in Windows so start to install the AMD chipset drivers. it has to reboot. it gets stuck. windows recovery screen. i get back into windows.

maybe it's my gpu drivers? try running DDU to wipe the shit Windows installed. DDU wants to reboot. i get fucking stuck again. can't even get the stupid PC to boot. clear CMOS. i can get into BIOS but not Windows. try disabling secure boot. that makes things worse can't even get into BIOS. the pc is now stuck in a loop where the monitor turns on and off and fans spin up and down. clear CMOS again. can get back into BIOS but still not into Windows.

at this point i give up for tonight. i don't have any hopes but i'll try again tomorrow. i'm so pissed off. feel like i've just wasted £1,000+ on this piece of shit.

i have a feeling the board is second hand and/or faulty. if i can't get it working i'll see if I can get a replacement board but if not the everything is getting sent back.

You already said it but that board sounds like it's been used before. No reason for it to reset the bios due to a "cpu change" unless it has had a CPU in there before.

Clear CMOS, reset bios to default, wipe drive clean and start again from scratch.

I'd take that board back immediately. I'd be like "nah, son, this bitch used. I want another one or we can throw hands". I'm sorry you had this frustrating experience. PC building should be fun for sure.

I need a new PC, mainly for console streaming and video creating, I don‘t ever play on PCs, but I also don‘t want it to be slow as f with editing videos. I‘m thinking of something like a gtx 2060, 64 gb ram, 2-4 tb of ssd, 12 core cpu. What would be a decent price with such a configuration? How much would you spend or should I change something with the work I‘m using it for in mind? Highly appreciate any tips.

The best way to help you answer your question is to give us the main course.

What's your budget? (This way, folks can point you in the right direction based on your funds, homie)

Hope you can figure it out, sounds very frustrating.
i'm not even going to bother trying again tomorrow. i know what's going to happen so im just wasting my time. i checked if Amazon could replace it but it's out of stock so the whole lot is going back for a refund.

i thought about keeping the cpu/ram/ssd and ordering the same board from another retailer but then i'll be out more money until Amazon refund it.

You already said it but that board sounds like it's been used before. No reason for it to reset the bios due to a "cpu change" unless it has had a CPU in there before.

Clear CMOS, reset bios to default, wipe drive clean and start again from scratch.

yeah i think it has been used. seems so odd to have these issues. the m.2 heat sink is totally fucked so even if i could boot into windows/reboot without issue i'd probably still be sending it back.

i tried doing all that. cleared cmos 3 times, loaded default bios settings twice. update BIOS. wiped the NVME drive twice to do clean install of windows but it's still getting stuck at boot/reboot.

I'd take that board back immediately. I'd be like "nah, son, this bitch used. I want another one or we can throw hands". I'm sorry you had this frustrating experience. PC building should be fun for sure.
i'm returning it all back to Amazon. they can't replace it so they can give me a refund.

just spent more time taking it all out and boxing it back up then putting my old parts back in. i'm pissed off and tired lol

I tried. Maybe something like this. I wanna puke for suggesting the 3060 Ti at that price, but I do believe the streaming capabilities are better on the Nvidia cards than AMD. I don't use my AMD card for streaming, so I couldn't tell you how good it is, but I heard its been "meh".

i know i said i am returning the parts i ordered but it's bothering me what is causing the issue with the board.

secure boot shouldn't be enabled on a "brand new" motherboard right? i mean of course if i buy a motherboard itself to build my own PC and not as part of a prebuilt or a machine from someone like say Microsoft/Dell etc.

other than the stripped screw on the nvme heatsink the board looked brand new. it still has the plastic covers over the the vrm, io shroud, and other heatsinks. the anti static bag it was in was taped and didn't look like it had been opened but i don't know. the box wasn't sealed but i didn't see any broken seal and i think my current motherboard was the same too.

also it did say something like "cpu has been changed. keep keys or reset". don't think i've ever seen that on a new board before.

if it is used then it sucks that amazon is selling it as brand new. i know one of the parts i ordered was from a third party but fulfilled from amazon. i meant to check that but i think it was the SSD.

edit: yeah it was the SSD. motherboard is sold by Amazon EU as "new".

A few years ago i was told that 8 cores should be the minimum for a gaming CPU. What does that mean for the newer generation 4 core i3s or 6 core i5s?

Friend of mine just got an i5 12400 CPU and that thing runs like a beast. I wouldn't expect him to be CPU limited for at least the next 5 years.

As far as I can tell the only difference is that (some) games like more cores but I think there's a reason why people often recommend the 5600X or intel 12600 etc. 6 cores 12 threads seems to be plenty as long as you also have respectable clock speeds. Anything beyond that seems to only be useful if you're trying to drive a really high-end GPU.

I tried. Maybe something like this. I wanna puke for suggesting the 3060 Ti at that price, but I do believe the streaming capabilities are better on the Nvidia cards than AMD. I don't use my AMD card for streaming, so I couldn't tell you how good it is, but I heard its been "meh".

Could you not save some money there?

You are right that £438 is on the high side for a 3060ti, at least compared to some of the prices I saw.

Also, with a bit of saving here and there on all these parts do you think it's possible to claw back enough to actually upgrade to a 3070?

I mean, is 64gb of RAM really necessary?

Is there any saving to be made on the RAM and maybe the CPU to get that extra money?

Are AM5 and B650 MBs DirectStorage compatible? I will get a 7800X3D and just want to be future proof.

i think as long as you have windows 11 installed, your nvme drive is 1TB minimum, and you have at least an nvidia 2000 card or amd rdna 2 card you can use direct storage. don't think it matters what cpu you have as long as it's not old. a 7800X3D should be fine.

directstorage is a windows api so really main thing is those i mentioned. windows 11 and a modern gpu.

Sure, you could always save somewhere. Could grab a DDR4 board, but figured this late in the game, would be more optimal to go with DDR5. I don't think 64GB of RAM is necessary, but I don't know what is planned outside of Streaming and Video editing. But I did do another build, but this time with Ryzen since you can grow into that platform. And I even got that 3070 in there for you, lol.

Nice one.

120W tdp! even for the 7950X3D! wow. rumours were 170W for them all.

aw man. well i guess i should've just waited lol. once i get my refund for my parts i'll consider giving AMD another shot with a 7800X3D and a different motherboard make from a different retailer! i was originally going to go with Asus so i'll try them.
eh TDP values are basically meaningless these days. intel and amd both fudge em. wait for the benchmarks for real world power draw under load.

excited about the 7900 and 7950x3d though. ill probably get one.

I haven't built a PC since the Pentium days. My laptop is on the verge of dying so I need a new PC. Here is what I have come up with:

277.00 - GIGABYTE B650 AORUS Elite AX
260.00 - AMD Ryzen™ 5 7600X 6-Core
205.00 - G.Skill Trident Z5 NEO RGB Series (AMD Expo) 32GB F5-6000J3038F16GX2-TZ5NR
443.00 - ASUS Dual AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT OC Edition 12GB GDDR6
160.00 - WD_BLACK 2TB SN770 NVMe
160.00 - EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G6, 80 Plus Gold 850W
50.00 - be quiet! Pure Rock 2 Black (BK007), 150W TDP
105.00 - Corsair 4000D Airflow Case

I want it to be able to handle a more power hungry CPU and GPU in the future, that is why I went with a 850W power supply.

Does anybody see any issues with this build?

I would like to build an AM4 build as I never upgrade (I change all the PC each time) and want to use the reduced price of the end of the generation but man those GPU prices are killing me. I missed the opportunity of the 6750XT at 400 CDN last month so now I wonder if I simply skip PC gaming for a while and just use my XSX. I can still play on PC, I have a 1070, it's just not enough for Elden Ring and CP2077 for my 4K TV.

You also need to be weary of the cooler not being AM5 compatible despite the fact that it might say it's AM5 compatible.

i know i said i am returning the parts i ordered but it's bothering me what is causing the issue with the board.

secure boot shouldn't be enabled on a "brand new" motherboard right? i mean of course if i buy a motherboard itself to build my own PC and not as part of a prebuilt or a machine from someone like say Microsoft/Dell etc.

other than the stripped screw on the nvme heatsink the board looked brand new. it still has the plastic covers over the the vrm, io shroud, and other heatsinks. the anti static bag it was in was taped and didn't look like it had been opened but i don't know. the box wasn't sealed but i didn't see any broken seal and i think my current motherboard was the same too.

also it did say something like "cpu has been changed. keep keys or reset". don't think i've ever seen that on a new board before.

Amazon unfortunately do not separate their stock from 3rd party seller's stock that is in their warehouse. So rarely you can get something that is fake or used but has been put back in by a 3rd party seller that received a return.

As for the message, it was this one right?
That only appeared on my AM4 system after fTPM had been enabled AND I slotted in a 5800X3D. Other CPU had been it for ~3 years before.

I'm trying to recall the secure boot one, but I cant quite remember. That is more to do with making sure Windows and other OS's boot partitions don't get owned IIRC. They populate it with standard keys for Win/Linux... unsure.

The secure boot might appear on a new system but the fFPM shouldn't appear.
Anyone else with a shiny new AM5 system able to weigh in?
I did find some old reference to CPUs being potentially faulty and displaying that message but they couldn't get past that message without disabling stuff in the bios. Nothing concrete.

Those m.2 screws shouldn't strip easily in my experience. Too small a driver could do it but those screws should never be secured gorilla-tight in the first place.

Mobo boxes aren't sealed. Just standard looking tape on the motherboard anti-static bag, not the tamper-proof stuff that they stick on GPU bags. All the plastic pouches in box are sealed.
If none of them are open you could do a check against what the manual says should be included - Things missing would add weight to "someone has fucked this before I got it". Page is right before the motherboard layout on my X570 Master manual.

I tried undervolting for the first time on my Ryzen 7700X and WOW it really made a huge difference. It dropped my temps over 30o. Take it from me, you really should look into undervolting if you haven't You might lose a little bit of performance OR you might even gain some, but the temp drops alone are so worth it.

Yeah, I am not OK with my CPU running at 95C doing things like using Chome.

Probably a bit more friendly & stable to just use eco mode, no? Or do the temps still persist with that?

AM4 is very viable. 6750xt has been going on sale for $499 at Canada Computers.

Does your series X keep you happy tho? If so, stick with it.

I did an AM4 build with a 6700xt. Migrated over to my LG C1 and now just went to a 7900xt. Very good but I still play my PS5 half the time.

I just followed this.

I used a -30 offset, set the max temp to 80C and the max power to 85W and so far the system works great.

I set the temperature and power down first before undervolting using the curve. I started at -10, ran Cinebench, the -20 and so far I have been holding stable at -30.

Fair enough. If it is anything like the way the 7950x works, I think just eco mode would do the job based on GN's testing with that CPU. Strongly suggest you run yrcruncher for a while if you want to be sure there isn't any random instability from the offset changes.

Yeah, I like my XSX, I got two TVs, one old 1080p where my XSX is plugged into on the first floor and my now-old 4KTV in the basement. My gaming PC is plugged into that one because I have only one HDMI port that allow 4K60hz. I have also a 144@144 monitor on this PC. As I play often with my daughter, a PC+XSX combo is fine since a lot of games are cross platforms. Though I prefer the easy way to just open the controller and play. On my PC, it's always a bit unreliable to set it for the big screen, change main screen, change audio output and the like, there's almost something that's wrong where Windows don't want to cooperate. But performance wise, I would say they performed the same (XSX and 1070).

I was thinking to go for AM4 build for Holidays but I can't forgive myself to doubt on the 400CDN deal for the 6750XT, I had the time to purchase it but I doubted, I hope I would see it again at that price further the road to no avail. I was also hoping getting a 3070 (or TI) around 500 CAD but I don't think I'll ever see this. I should go for a second hand but it's not like buying a Switch game, a GPU can be used beyond margins and you couldn't know.
