It’s so bad there is some actual unrest and protesting but I’m sure it will be brutally quelled.
The camps make me wonder if this is really a Covid reaction or some other outbreak or just an excuse to round massive amounts of people up.
Regardless, after successfully deploying this level of control and seeing how effective it is, it's unlikely that the scope will remain limited to Covid quarantine. Now all it takes is a red flag on your digital identity to compel you to remove yourself from society straight to a camp of their choosing. Very convenient for the State.

Twitter’s radically reduced anti-propaganda team grappled on Sunday with a flood of nuisance content in China that researchers said was aimed at reducing the flow of news about stunning widespread protests against coronavirus restrictions.
Numerous Chinese-language accounts, some dormant for months or years, came to life early Sunday and started spamming the service with links to escort services and other adult offerings alongside city names.
The result: For hours, anyone searching for posts from those cities and using the Chinese names for the locations would see pages and pages of useless tweets instead of information about the daring protests as they escalated to include calls for Communist Party leaders to resign.
It is not the first time that suspected government-connected accounts have used the technique, according to a recently departed Twitter employee. But in the past, it was used to discredit a single account or a small group by naming them in the escort ads.
“This is a known problem that our team was dealing with manually, aside from automations we put in place,” said the former employee, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to avoid retribution for disclosing internal processes.
The campaign was spotted by researchers at Stanford University and elsewhere. Stanford Internet Observatory Director Alex Stamos said his team is working to determine how widespread and effective it is.
A current Twitter employee told an outside researcher that the company was aware of the problem by midday and was working to resolve it.
By late Sunday, news and images of the protests were showing up in searches for posts in cities where rallies were being held.

Yeah. Tiananmen wasn't just a some soldiers opening fire and a tank blockade. They ran over protestors with their tanks, turned their bodies into mush and then whatever was left of the crushed mess they just hosed off into storm drains. Pretty much the most brutal crackdown by a government on their own people that has ever been seen.

How one factory can house over 100k-200k employees? The scale of China, good or bad, never ceases to amaze me.
I do hope Zero Covid policy would go away for their own sake... and I do hope Apple and American companies dealing with such would take appropriate measure for their suffering.
(I know Apple is supposed to be doing active investigation of what's happening there - but I'm not sure what's there stance will be.)

Back before the pandemic started in earnest, early 2020, one of the things that alarmed US intelligence was their observation of China rapidly building a number of hospitals and erecting what appeared to be temporary, makeshift sites to deal with treating people. China can build quickly. Their activity in this respect can serve as the proverbial canary in a coal mine.

There was never any lockdown here over the pandemic. Some mild quarantining for 10 days. Masking. Restaurants/bars/gyms/entertainment shut down for months. Temp vaccine passes when reopening for that. The provincial economy receded by 5% during this, but has recovered. With a 95% antibody rate currently in population without ever having to call on feds for help from overwhelmed health care and lower death rate from covid than many similar health regions indicates some well informed policy in the circumstances.
It's funny that in our country our province was considered one of the most dangerous for covid for being lax but strict to other people. Eastern provinces went more for zero covid and were stricter about travel.

Effective as in there's still Covid and those asymptomatic cases that can be shuffled to one side of the line or the other as needed. Chinas methods were security theater and just a couple weeks after the protests surprisingly they are walking them back now.

That's a pretty simplistic way of looking at things. Ultimately, BC's lower death rate was not that much lower and almost entirely due to it missing the first wave from the good fortune of having a late spring break.
