Felt like it was stuff we already could assume. They didn't stop Ymir because they were young panicked kids, they infiltrated with the victims of the attack, they wanted to be in military police to be close to the founding titan which was the plan for all three until Reiner went nuts. I hope 97, 98 and 99 are build up to an awesome 100.

This is the first time a chapter feels completely pointless to me.

Not necessarily. I like the filling in of details around the first attack! It explains a lot of missing pieces pretty well(like how come there were so many titans just waiting outside that particular gate, and why we didn't see the female titan in the attack).

Also, the most substantive part of this chapter for the future of the series imo was getting to know more about Annie's position on everything before she became a soldier. It's clearly foreshadowing about finally furthering her story line after all these years, my guess is she'll help the Walldians in some way because she clearly never gave a shit about Marley in the first place. This chapter was the perfect opportunity to make Annie relevant again.

Yeah, a Marley infiltration requires someone who understands Marley. That's not going to be Armin or Eren, who have the memories but not the lived experience.

This is Armin/Eren/Annie as the 3 going in the other direction.

God, Reiner's such a fuckup.

Also, I'm pretty sure Eren was the reason why Reiner and Bert decided not to join the Military Police, so they could keep track of him, not Reiner's insanity. We'll find out in due time I assume. I'm guessing this will be going through BRA's point of view all the way until the Reiner/Bert reveal. Good way to fill time and give characterization to the 3.

Love how we get to see past events in a whole new context

Thought Isayama lost his mojo after the whole Historia arc, but damn this manga is really freaking good again

Yup, it was because of Eren's appearance, which altered their plans- Annie went ahead w/ the plan, they stayed behind. This is also the reason why Erwin organized the post-Trost scouting mission. Once he realized Colossal/Armored titans were people, the Armored titan not showing up meant that something had gone wrong. (and the obvious "something" being the Attack Titan.)

The chapter was worth it because it clarified one important point:
they were not infiltrated in the Eldian society when the attack started with Colossal opening up the wall. I always thought they infiltrated much more mundanely, like entering form the doors saying they were from a remote village, they scouted the area, integrated with the rest, and months later, they started the attack.
But from what we have seen, they really didn't know what was inside the walls (normal humans, not 'demons') when they attacked, and they were in a desperate position.

how could you think that, when humans never knew what was outside of wall maria?

how can someone come from outside and say ah yeah we come from a village out there.

for the people inside, there was nothing but titans outside

I'm in the boat where I also want to see the OG crew. It's been too long.

I like the clarifications of a few details here, but I'm not sure they were questions any of us had. Such as how they managed to pass off as being from a remote village etc.

I think that we've already seen eren in a chapter, he's one of the mindless titans brought back from the mission. The squad have infiltrated the outer society. Just hope we don't have a drawn out flashback arc showing what happened before hand though!

I'm really excited for the future of the story, I LOVE the direction it's gone in.

Oh my god, they're actually
building up to bringing Annie back aren't they?

Neat chapter, the buildup to the OG crew coming back better have a hell of a payoff they way they're doing this.

I wonder what was up with the Smiling Titan at the end though. Was she supposed to have recognized Bert or was that just another example of "Some titans are RANDOM!" when she just changed course after seeing him.

Great chapter! Lots of juicy information this chapter to digest until next month.

Also, holy shit @ poor Reiner. I know he's done some really bad stuff, but I can't help but feel bad for him. Seems completely haunted by the miserable life he's lived.

That was a good treat. Looks like things will start to heat up. Can't wait for Reiner to find out the truth.

It didn't make a sense to me having
Reiner trying suicide now. I mean, it would make sense for him after returning from Paradis Island, but let's remember it has passed four years. It seems a scene put because we are having his flashback of guilt now.

But overall, a cool chapter. We have now four factions:
-Marley
-Eldians - the true King/Paradis Island
-Eldians - under Marley control
-Eldians - Tybur Family.

What I suspect it really happened is the following: it wasn't normal humans/Marleyans the ones that defeated the Titans, that's propaganda, again. Eldians were surely divided in small kingdoms/warring factions, with each shift Titan being the leader of each one. Maybe Hisayama thought something like the Sengoku period?
Wars between them were normal, and that has been going for hundreds of years. But 100 years ago, a bigger war than normal between Eldians happened, and finally it won one faction, the Tybur family. The biggest opposing faction retreated to the island (or maybe it's true they were fed up of so much war), and the smaller, defeated titan kingdoms were subjugated and given to the underlings of Tybor, the Marleyans.

PTSD doesn't just go away after a week like a flu
Even after 4 years he can still have very dark episodes, since PTSD lasts on average between 3-5 years

I think we are supposed to see the last few chapters worth of flashbacks as being Reiner's memories leading up to his potential suicide.

Also, I very much doubt that this is the first time he has contemplated suicide, though it may be the closest he's gotten to actually doing it so far. I don't think it's unrealistic at all. Upon returning from Paradis he likely had a lot to deal with, between debriefings, working with the next generation, helping in the 4-year war and more. If you don't have time to think about what you've done then you're likely to keep on being a warrior focused on your duties. Keep in mind he was in full warrior mode at the end of his stint on Paradis. He hadn't gotten to experience adult life back in his hometown(without Bertholdt by his side) until now. He was a child soldier on an insane and complex mission, completely incapable of self introspection until this point. It's only when he had some peaceful downtime after Marley's most recent war is he realizing that the whole thing is a cruel, fucked up joke and he's just some pathetic monster parading around as a warrior or soldier or whatever.

To me it is 100% realistic that he's just now seriously considering suicide. He's tired, he hates himself, and he sees nothing but more pain and anguish in the near future.

edit: FYI I don't think spoiler tags are needed in here by nature of what this thread is for

I didn't take the scene as the first time he attempted to commit suicide, he's suffering from PTSD and depression episodes are probably not uncommon for him to suffer.

Considering how mellow Eren is, I wonder if he actually participated on the war as a Marley soldier.

I also expect Annie to be back, I imagine she helped Eren infiltrate into Marley.

I really love how Magath is a genuinely good guy.

It isn't he is a super 'good guy', he is... just a guy. A normal one. Like most guys, he has a job to do, and friends and family.
Which is the success of the series, the other side is mostly filled with normal people, not evil moustache-twirling villains.

Hes working to help Eldians. He cared for his troops. His whole argument was he was tired of seeing Eldians die, while Marley did nothing.

Superb chapter. I'm really appreciating seeing the flashbacks from their perspective. Things are definitely going to blow up soon and
Eren's gone all Plisskin

Every time I think Reiner's life can't get worse I read the next chapter.

Months later.. Still relevant :p

Having Reiner blow his brains out would've been a good ending for him. Fuck, I want him to die so badly.

At this point it's starting to feel like Hajime Isayama wants to have a redemption arc for Reiner, though. It would've surprise me if he switched sides by the end.

Fiiiine, I'll care about Reiner, jeez. Really though, great build up to that scene. It was a real holy shit moment for me.

Also really great to see Eren.

Edit: Reread the chapter, plot armor saves Reiner again, this motherfucker is cursed lol

I think he's definitely going to end up betraying Marley, though Eren's side will never accept him regardless of what he does.

What I want to see is Warhammer and Galliard wreck the Islanders and Reiner sacrifice himself to let them escape. Though, for Reiner's arc, it would made more sense if he sacrificed himself for Historia's life.

I'm so happy that this manga is back to being awesome.

(Despite the fact that the last chapter was terribly drawn even by this series' standards.)
