To me, ResetEra, as a whole, feels way less fun than the old place. Now, what exactly am I talking about? I'm not talking about too much political threads or depression threads, even if it seems there are an endless barrage of these a day. I'm a political guy, I'm a black dude, we live in the Trump Age, so obviously I like to engage in political discussions and serve shit to racist and fascists. But, what I'm talking about is outside all of that, I'm talking about the fun aspect of browsing and participating on this forum.

Its like a fancy private school, but the private school is full of people on scholarships, so the Disciplinary Deans are on that zero tolerance policy, and the students are like but thats not how the real world works and you know it, and the deans are like we know but don't care as long as you are here, you have to do things this way or you lose your scholarship

This is why I said nothing is allowed to evolve. Those threads didn't evolve into craziness, they were already there from the get go. Gaf had a shit ton of amazing threads that started off as something completely different but slowly evolved into legendary status, those threads on ERA would've gotten locked as soon as the crazy shit happened. ERA likes to cut loose like someone having 2 beers instead of one. Like someone going to bed at 9:30 PM instead of 9:00 PM on a work night. Like someone saying they're kinky because one time they watched a porn with pink fluffy handcuffs.

Nothing will touch the creativity and energy of early GAF. For what it is worth, resetera is a whole lot more easy going place than late GAF.

I have to agree with the OP. So many times I've seen threads locked with a moderator note saying, "Can we not..." like it's some huge affront to our moral standing having something with no real merit other than humor.

A couple of days ago i went into the old forum and they were talking mad shit about how ERA was banning people left and right for the whole CDPR Tweet and it just made me think about wth goes on in here sometimes. Maybe its just me, but it does seem this forum has some ridiculous levels of moderation that get in the way of its potential.

This place is about a billion times less interesting and fun than GAF was. OP hit on a lot of points. The moderation around here is doing the site a disservice imo. Can’t help but think people would leave if a viable alternative came up. Oh, and the name is still stupid hahaha.

If they wish to return and act like actual adults and have meaningful debates/discussions (or simply talk about games on a gaming forum) without relying on the oh-so-familiar ad hominems and baseless accusations that we are so used to seeing from their type - I don't think anyone would have an issue. Sadly I just don't see that happening.

They won't be able to because their baseline poor social conditioning compounded with years of confining themselves to a social justice echo chamber has rendered them incapable of rational thought or dissenting opinions.

It’s probably reverted to the GAF you wanted to join for years, but had trouble getting your account approved for just as long, only to see it whirlpool into a SJW black hole as soon as your work email got approved. Or maybe that was me.

It's the same story with me, wanted to register over a decade ago but never could get approved over the eyars, then it became SJWville.

Glad to be onboard now, I would have said a forum as busy as this one no longer existed on the modern web, but I would be wrong.

Peak GAF was post 911 GWB/early Obama GAF. We had a good decade or so run there.

I’m not entirely sold on either Resetera or NuGAF at this point. I like the new approach to moderation here, but too many of the threads devolve to “why are liberals ruining the world”. Resetera has more content and generally is a more interesting read, but I’m scared to post anything there.

This is why I never understood the account suicides. Want to leave Gaf? Dont visit the site.....I knew moderation over there would be a nightmare and I've seen some bizarre levels of hypocrisy and lunacy with the trigger happy moderation there (which is why I never bothered to join).

So those members now on permaban, I wonder how many of them were also account suicides here.

Wonder if Gaf mods are had anyone request reversals on their account suicide?

The internet in general used to be so much better back then, I've seen a lot of communities myself crumble over the last 5 years, it's actually REALLY fucking sad when you stop to think about it.

The internet used to be a beautiful escape from reality, especially in that post 911 GWB era you mention, we ruined it.

Yeah, you're right about that, these people are so mental, it's a fantasy to think they could handle opposing views.

I just remember in the old days of the net when conservatives and liberals actually would hash it out and debate back and forth, things could get heated, but nobody would have wanted to totally silence the other.

I feel like GAF is significantly better than it has been in years. You actually get a laugh out of some of the threads now a days, which was pretty common years ago. With the population reduction I actually feel like I know some posters here which I haven’t felt in years.

I would say this place felt pretty humorless for the last several years and just had an underlying tension all the time, that feeling is present when I look at era( I am not a member). I think my biggest concern was the very slow posting rate here but it seems to be growing.

Interesting reading your perspective as an older member. I'm a bit unsure about whether the bolded is actually representative of the forum, mostly because at least from the political compass thread, we seem to be mostly liberals. I do agree that it's a shame in the instances where "libtard" and "liberals <insert generalization>" occur, but a lot of us quickly call out to it and at most we try to avoid liberal vs conservative as an identity, but instead argue issues and principles. If anything I'd say we are generally beyond typical American partisanship, having a diverse amount of people of different opinions. I mean, just look at the Politics sub-forum, quite a varied angle on the various topics.
Getting people to talk together again, moving away from polarization, allowing for both critique and dumb fun, allowing people to debate furiously, but keep things at a reciprocal civility. Not isolating into small communities of those who think like you, but rather meeting various people. That's kind of how forums used to be, a place where people with one interest gathered, but also discussed numerous things they disagreed with, while also sharing a sense of fellowship and an internal humor.

In a way, I think people have gotten too attached to the online communities, trapped in dependency and a sunk cost fallacy. From my experience growing up with the internet and numerous online communities, it's mostly just been a means to meet other people and talk with people, whether you agree or disagree with them. I'd say the best thing about "NuGAF" is that it has the potential to be anything you want to grow it into, due to you as a participant being far more valuable and important, influencing the discourse and the environment.

I'm not a diehard conservative.

Whilst the place is a lot more active than here every topic felt like walking on egg shells. You saw the User was banned for this post and you questioned, they were banned for that? Polices “gaming” topics had people dog piled for having a different opinion and eventually being banned for not elaborating on their opinion, gee wonder why.

I got tired of browsing topics with thinly veiled political propaganda steering, negative titles only created to provoke anger or a discussion they have every day to keep the ban train going.

I just want to see what’s coming out and talk about what I’m playing currently without fear of being banned because I wanted to play a male character in the new Cyberpunk game.
