Official May 2008 NPD Thread - Wii, GTA IV, and more Wii

Wow. almost missed reading the NPD thread. I guess I had to slowly step away from playing MGS4 to post :p Wii continues to dominate as expected. MS is going to have to spice things up, if it wants to get more people hyped about there hardware.

The 360 market is really saturated and I don't think Gears of War 2 is going to make people rush out and buy a 360 when most of those people bought a 360 for the first game. Fable 2 is not a system seller either. A price drop is going to help them, but then you have to look at some of the games Sony has coming out. Resistance 2 will be every bit as big as Gears of War 2.

It's not good enough for Sony to be as good as Microsoft. They have to blow them away if they hope to even come close to catching up in the states.

The June numbers probably won't be any better. The PS3 *may* have been held back because people were waiting on the MGS4 pack, but I doubt it. The 360, its just done at this price point.

I am expecting price drop megatons at E3 galore.

And who do you expect is awaiting a price drop before they purchase one?

I don't think Wii Play should count as a $50 game.

Interesting software numbers. 5 out of the top 10 are Wii games. So since the Wii is about the same as the 360 install base now Wii games are selling more. I know 10 games don't tell the whole picture but are Wii gamers buying more software than 360 owners? Or is it just that there are not many new releases for 360?

Anomaly meaning it's the one that is unusually different/strong for a generation.

Not unlike the PS2.

Or the Super Nintendo.

Or the Gameboy.

So, yes, anomaly.

Not 'fad.'

Anomaly.

Get it?

This is what I'm thinking. People who shout "drop the price now, MS!" are essentially clinging to the idea that the 360 will be competitive with the Wii at a lower price point. But this isn't going to happen. There's a limited amount of pent up demand, especially when you consider how long the 360 has been on the market. If there's no chance of challenging Nintendo, MS has no reason to price drop. They'd be lowering their margins for a small sales bump.

The Wii has more in common with the NES than any of those systems.

The NES was the anomaly for it's time period, too.

What's your point?

I'm not saying Wii-type gaming doesn't have a future.

I'm saying HD gaming still does.

I'm thinking the HD generation doesn't really start until Nintendo says it does.

They should still want to be a strong second worldwide (like N64). If Sony stays even or slightly above 360 month to month and keeps outselling in Japan and Europe it could shift the attention of publishers that put out games that have at least some appeal in two or all three areas. There is really no reason for only $50 off the main sku after more than 2.5 years. Outselling PS3 when it was overpriced and didn't have a lot of games out wasn't a miracle.

So Microsoft having an HD system that sales millions of games each month isn't a signal consumers have accepted and embraced HD gaming?

Get off your Nintendo high horse.

I love them as much as the next guy. They're having a great generation.

Just like Sony's had before.

Just like Sega's had before.

Just like Nintendo themselves have had before.

But is it anything more than that? Who the fuck knows.

HD gaming is here. Is it dominating? No. But it's definitely here.

Or maybe you're just blind.

Wow @ Wii, it really fought off the next-gen! :p

I wonder what next month will mean for WiiFit. I don't know how big it will be because it's $90, and that many of this month's sales were preorders.

Nevertheless I can't wait to get my feets on it.

Mario Kart did just awesome. The game is a bit of a learning curve for me but the motion controls really get me into the game. Rainbow Road is an absolute mindfuck though. :lol

Nintendo is in front for the first time in 15 years. Don't act like they've been in first place the whole time.

The best-selling games are still HD games (Halo 3, COD4, GTA4).

mio said:
True, but DS and PS2 games aren't $60 either, and then there's the $90 WiiFit.

I don't think you get it. Those games are $60 in and of themselves. Wii Play is a $10 game with a $40 controller.

If "HD gaming" was a bust, all the third party sales would be on PS2, Wii, and the handhelds. They're actually pretty fortunate that with high hardware prices and abnormal failure rates that there's enough people left to buy so many copies of their games.

The Wii, as well as the NES, followed a highly effective business strategy. Their success is/was not an anomaly, but rather the result of this strategy.

weren't you saying this last month too?

WiiPlay isn't the only Wii game selling and it isn't screwing with your so-awesome HD games

why the hell do you care so much

You don't know what the word anomaly means, do you?

An "anomaly" that has happened for the past three generations can't really be considered an "anomaly" anymore, you know. ;)

If you really mean to use the word "anomaly" why do your posts keep trying to make a point that Wii isn't unique?

The Wii is unique it it's execution.

Not in it's sales.

And I said it's THIS GENERATIONS anomaly.

Meaning --

1. a deviation from the common rule, type, arrangement, or form.

It's the one that sticks out among it's fellow competitors. Anomaly.

But that doesn't mean there haven't been others throughout history.

Pretty simple...

If anything the PS3 is the one tracking fine towards the future. I wouldn't be concerned about it.

PS3 sales have doubled year over year with the 100 dollar price drop. Once the PS3 drops to 299 sales will skyrocket higher. The way the PS3 is trending with each successive price drop it will be selling massive units. 360 is the system stagnating. Drop the price MS.

360 is improved over last year. If only slightly. PS3 is improve over nothing.

I do see your point, but it would only be a concern for MS if they weren't so far ahead of the PS3 already. There's no need to worry about PS3. Wii is the threat.

Hey, everyone! Let's ignore all past history and look only at this generation. Any system not selling like most of the other systems must be an "anomaly" (i.e. it shouldn't count, since it's an outlier).

What's that? I was comparing it to the SNES and PS2? Oh, crap!

I think the term you're looking for is "winner." :lol

I think Nintendo's going to be in a real strong position next gen. RE6, FF14, etc.-like exclusives will be their's since 3rd-parties will know to focus on them now. And maybe Nintendo will fix the online too.

Even if they're a gen behind and just release a 360 with remote next gen for $250, well, that's still pretty awesome I think.

Microsoft has no need to worry about the PS3? Huh?

And about the Wii being an anomaly, what aren't people getting?

Every generation has a system that sticks out (hence the word anomaly!!!)

This generation it is the Wii.

An anomaly can happen more than once. It's the deviation from the standard.

Many past systems have 'deviated from the standard.' Hence the use of the word 'anomaly.'

It's not an exclusive thing. Damn...

Sometimes I think some people posting here have never even read a book let alone know what certain words mean.
