Media Create Sales: Week 50, 2014 (Dec 08 - Dec 14)

I'm fairly surprised at how terribly the Wii U is doing. Nintendo have thrown out everything they can, but people barely give the slightest shit. Seems the PS4 will be slapping it around for fun next year.
I'd wager so almost assuredly.

That's doesn't exactly speak great things for this gen though.

Slapping around a console I don't expect to get much higher than 3+ million units. Between 3-3.5 million units is where I expect WiiU to taper off. Overall I expect the home console market to contract by a minimum of 9 million units and a maximum of 11.

PS4 will end it's run between 5.5-6 million units.

I think we would see more multiplatforms if Nintendo really wanted to merge the handheld and console together as "one system". That said though, i dont think that will happen. I'm sure that Nintendo will threat the systems as two different systems, giving them exclusive games.

My worry is not Nintendo but 3rd parties

Did you expect higher numbers than last year? This is the 4th year on the market for the 3DS and the circumstances are quite harsh considering the boom of smartphones and that everything else is quite dead.

It reached a point of decline in it's product life cycle, that's pretty normal.

plcsxrlx.gif

We seem to have hit that a while ago.

Let's assume this year sells almost the same as last year for the last two weeks and hits 3,150,000 for YTD.

3dsdecliney5u3y.png

I thought you're talking about the whole year.

Yeah, it probably could've/should've been more this holiday season then. Obviously, the "decline effect" is larger than the revision and Yokai Watch effect. (unfortunately)

Really looking forward to 2015 performance.

Yeah, I mean I don't think Nintendo should be extremely worried (the 3DS had an ok November in America with basically no big deals), but they certainly shouldn't wait until the 3DS is on its last legs before launching the new handheld.

My opinion on the matter is that we'll see most titles being multiplatform, with just a few being exclusive to the home consoles because of their scale / impossibility to scale back for the handheld. Which is quite similar to what we see on iPhone / iPad. And iOS / Android are the examples Iwata mentioned back in January.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
3DS' HW performance is worrisome but until there is a huge software decline - not experienced as of yet - the games will keep on rolling.

To be honest, without the 3DS, a lot of video game retailers would of closed shops already.

2016 is surely the year when next handheld will launch, but I'm still unsure when. A part of me thinks that it'll be CYQ4 2016, due to New 3DS launching early next year in America / Europe, but another part of me remember of what Iwata said back in May

http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/library/events/140508qa/index.html

Also, the idea I mentioned about redefining the definition of video game platforms will also require approximately two years

Approximately two years, if said in May, sounds more like a CYQ1 2014 launch rather than Q4. But it would be just one year after New 3DS's launch in the West. Which would be pretty similar to what happened with DSi XL and 3DS. Seriously, I'm debated.

That waht they said when Vita was announced

What we're talking about here isn't just things like making shaders port over easily and using the same libraries, but rather actually having the console and the handheld be extremely similar on a fundamental level in the same way that an iPad uses almost the same processor/memory/gpu configuration as an iPhone.

The Vita is a 4 core ARM + 4 core PowerVR5 chip with 512 MB of RAM (half used by the OS) and 128 MB of VRAM whereas the PS3 is a Cell Processor + NVIDIA GPU with 256 MB of system RAM (almost all of it for the games sans ~40-50 MB) and 256 MB of VRAM.

They're fundamentally different systems compared to what a more literal interpretation of Iwata's statement would be.

How did you find the experience of porting to Vita? Was it easier or harder than what you expected?

The PS Vita has very high specs and we were surprised at how much PS3 data we could easily reuse on the PS Vita. The PS Vita has numerous features and we feel that this console has broadened the spectrum of games that we can develop.

Boujemaa El Hiba - Producer of Rayman Origins (Ubisoft Montpelier)

How did you find the experience of porting to Vita? Was it easier or harder than what you expected?

Porting Rayman Origins to the Vita was a very enjoyable experience, and was actually easier than expected. Developing on a new console is always something challenging but also motivating. The Vita's performance and a mature SDK allowed us to reach the high quality level we targeted.

When you are porting a game to a handheld, you always have to take advantage of the console's capabilities by introducing new features that respect the DNA of the original game. That's exactly what we did with Rayman Origins on PS Vita.

Yosuke Hayashi, director of Ninja Gaiden Sigma (Team Ninja)

How did you find the experience of porting to Vita? Was it easier or harder than what you expected?

The Vita has very high performance for a handheld, so the porting was much simpler than we thought. The time we saved on the actual porting gave us more room to focus on the actual development work for adding brand new features exclusive to Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus.

I remember someone asked about the download numbers for Vita version of Million Arthur a while ago. Not sure if it was answered but here it is.

Vita's Million Arthur took about 4 months to reach 100K downloads (Apr 11, 2013 ~ Aug 24, 2013).

3DS's Million Arhur took about 1 month to reach 200K downloads (Oct 22, 2014 ~ Dec 5, 2014).

Also, Vita's first (?) F2P title casualty, Dairansou Dash or Dasshu!! will end its service on Dec 22, 2014, about 10 months after it was launched.

PS4 almost at 70k and Wii U around 30k even with Smash Bros... I... I think this is it? I've been trying to be optimistic with Wii U's situation, hoping to see some kind of a comeback during the holidays thanks to Smash and MK8 but just look at those numbers... there's still 2 weeks left of december of course but this is just depressing.

This post also made me realize it's incredibly difficult to google for how many downloads either the original mobile game or the new one from a few weeks ago have gotten.

But interesting info none-the-less. There seems to be pretty good f2p adoption on handhelds starting up and increasing over time.

Yeah, it's scary. Without YW exploding in popularity and the new revision I doubt the 3DS would have sold much higher than 2-2.3M in 2014.

That would have been awful for the japanese market.

Reminds me of the old "it doesn´t count" posts whenever a successful 3rd party IP sold well on NDS, since you know 3rd party software doesn´t sell on Nintendo systems... Really don´t see the point in using positive selling points in such a manner. This year it got these, while last year the system was younger and had its first Pokemon and Monster Hunter sequel to push sales. Products with a normal lifecycle tend to decline
(surprise)
.

Looking at Chriss comparison chart, 3DS sold basically the same as last year since the launch of the revision (from week41-now), something not imaginable just a few months ago, considering the decline in the first half of the year.

Either way it´s a quite silly thing to equal a decline with bad sales, ignoring the actual numbers at hand. It sold over 150k units last week. The same as selling less than the by far most successful system in Japan (NDS) doesn´t immediately equal bad sales, regardless of how much some pushed to that sentiment. To simplify things, everything that sells similar or even outpaces the PS2 in Japan can be considered a big success, and it´s always quite funny to see people pushing the idea of "disappointing","bad" 3DS sales, despite the fact of 3DS outpacing the PS2 so far.

Between 500,000 - 1,000,000

Which is...the same, download-wise O_O It must be due to the increased popularity of the franchise.

Shame about Dairansou Dash or Dasshuu, it had really nice character art and music, the gameplay was just incredibly barebones and pretty ugly. Hopefully they do something with the IP and premise in the future, it had some potential.

Typo aside, yeah you're right. I mean, if Nintendo want to, they could go as far as making their next console and handheld run the same binary.

? My post has nothing to do with that. It's not an attack on the poor little 3DS.

I'm saying that thank god Yokai Watch exploded in popularity and Nintendo released a new revision, because everything else is selling like shit and the overall awful hardware sales would have been even lower if not for those two things.

I think that would be the ideal, or at least something very close to it, so that anyone who makes a game for their handheld have effectively automatically made a game for their console.

Iwata said:
We only started distributing those new games [Mii Plaza] a week ago, but already more than 200,000 consumers had purchased at least one out of those four games by last Sunday. We employed no mass-media advertising so we think we are off to a good start.

Sure. Point is, hw sells thanks to games, revisions, and so on. Sometimes because of some new feature (e.g. motion controls). So, YW, New 3DS, the incredible success of SSB 3DS, etc. must be viewed as pros, as strategies that Nintendo and third parties successfully implemented to make the YOY decline slower. And it worked greatly. It is also worrying to see how 3DS *is* basically the Japanese traditional market, and without it retailers would have been struggling.

We seem to have hit that a while ago.

Let's assuming this year sells almost the same as last year for the last two weeks and hits 3,150,000 for YTD.

Only thing disappointing is the Wii U hardware. Or Smash?

Well, I think 3DS could be up YOY next week, because what else is going to explode next week?

Software in general seems good, but is it really?

=) - Toad should hit 100K fairly easily if this keeps up.

30./00. [WIU] Taiko no Tatsujin: Tokumori! # <ACT> (Bandai Namco Games) {2014.11.20} (¥5.627) - 5.114 / 23.475 <20-40%>
eek.... bye bye Taiko for Wii U....

09./12. [WIU] Mario Kart 8 # <RCE> (Nintendo) {2014.05.29} (¥6.156) - 24.098 / 765.670 <80-100%> (+34%)
Btw, Media Create is reporting very similar #s for Mario Kart as well. Are they also including bundle #s in this case?

Very impressed with the PS4 bundle sales, but the Wii U is super disappointing. I think the console needs a pretty big price cut throughout the world. I kind of suspect we'll be getting a $100 pricecut sometime next year as sales are starting to stagnate (which they definitely already have in JP).

Does anyone else feel that TGS gave momentum to the PS4, and killed off the Vita? Up until that point it seemed to me the PS4 was dead and the Vita was doing fairly well and might be up YoY.

Yay, it's rising for the holidays :). I hope it will stay in the top 30 for the remainder of the year. Together with our last known Yoshi number in the US, 287k after june, it's at over half a million between those two regions. Too bad it will probably not reach a million worldwide though :(.

It did really well in Italy. I'm not sure the rest of Europe could make it reach a million, but maybe.

I really don't see how these 3DS numbers are good when they just released a huge revision a huge game came out and they are still down YoY.I guess it just shows how awful the 3DS numbers could have been if they didn't release the n3DS. Wii U numbers are just awful.

Ok.
But why would you consider that...?

"What if things that increase sales didn't exist!"

What if Wii U didn't have Smash or Kart this year. Oh man.
What if PS4 didn't have GTA and DQH this week. It's could've been below the Wii U. The Wii U.

I see the point you're trying to make, I just don't think it's a very good one. Hypotheticals are...just that.

It's a port of an enchanced remake of an Xbox original title that came out on the PS3 that runs at half the framerate of either version. It may have been easy, but evidently it wasnt easy enough.

It looks like the Vita will either come out of 2014 with the same amount of sales as 2013 or just a little bit less. A shame, really, because Japan was kinda the last bastion of hope for decently budgeted vita productions, and if the console is now starting to decline there then that's pretty much over. Sigh.

Imo shows that the potential for the PS4 to do great in Japan is there, but it needs a LOT more Japan- fiendly software fast. Fortunately it looks like 2015 might deliver on that front.
Looks like we will see the 1m consoles sold before the end of the yer, unless a steep drop happens.

Great results for GTA V too. This thing is a beast everywhere.

? My post has nothing to do with that. It's not an attack on the poor little 3DS.

I'm saying that thank god Yokai Watch exploded in popularity and Nintendo released a new revision, because everything else is selling like shit and the overall awful hardware sales would have been even lower if not for those two things.

It wasn´t intended to be a response specifically to you, you ended beeing quoted just because it was similar to metalslimers post and by mistake I ended up quoting you instead. No point in overreacting...

Using the new3DS release and Youkai Watch, or any means in general to push sales in general to spin 3DSs current good performance into a negative is just backwards. Creating new incentives to sell your merchandise is just business as usual. That´s why I was reminded and refering to how good 3rd party sales on NDS were downlplayed by some arbitrary rules/exclusions etc. and since that´s its predecessor I think it was worth beeing mentioned.

Go PS4 :D

Just imagine whats going to happen when DQ11 releases on it ;) Sony should do more bundles.....still waiting for that Bloodborne/FF Type-0 bundle Sony -__-

No one should be surprised by WiiU's poor showing.
