Covid 19 Thread: [no bitching about masks of Fauci edition]

The previous OT thread turned into endless series of tweets about how bad Fauci was and how we don't know how effective masks are. Which is quite political and, as the GAF overlord ruled out discussing politics on this forum, the thread was locked.

Please do not raise the mentioned subjects in this thread.

Updates on Germany:
7th of June was the promised date of dropping the vaccination restrictions (before, only protected groups/65+ could).
And let it sink in, in a country of 82 million, there were already 55 million doses administered (45.7% of population got at least one jab, of which 21.3% is fully vaccinated) up until now only protected groups/65+ could get it.

After some fighting with "home doctor", my wife managed to get an appointment for J&J by the end of June.
Pfizer (in Germany, strictly "BioNTech" :)) was not an option (standard "call in 3 weeks" answer).

Jabs Germany got as of 6th of June:

ntPAcYo.png

Top to bottom: J&J (1.7M), Moderna (5.8M), AZ (10.8M), BioNTech-Pfizer (42.7M).
Crazy bit: AZ was supposed to be the dominant vaccine.

One thing I'm finding interesting is how countries that handled the start of the pandemic well (like Australia) are really falling behind with their vaccine rollout, whereas countries like the UK and US that started badly, are doing a great job when it comes to vaccinations. Both things have happened as a result of complacency in the governments responsible, just at different times.

And back last year everyone I know in the UK was pissed off with Boris and Co, but now we're all happy over here, whereas everyone in Australia is now pissed off with Scott and Co.

yesterday there was a news item here in The Netherlands that case numbers were rising again in the UK, due to the 'indian' or delta variant of the virus. I got a bit worried because I was vaxxed with AstraZeneca, just like most of the UK... :messenger_open_mouth:

I’m just glad this shit is over (here in FL, at least). There is maybe 1 in 10 people still wearing masks here in FL, but for the most part everything is open and everything is back to normal. Everyone seems so much happier too. However, I had one customer who I was dropping off groceries to, and he got freaked out when I started moving closer to drop off his stuff and said “no stay back!”. Poor guy is scared half to death, I feel bad for him. But other than a that everything is back to the way it was before COVID and there is a huuuge metal fest coming to Daytona in November and I can’t wait 🤘

I just had COVID about two months ago and the paperwork I got with my test results told me to wait for 3 months to get vaxxed. So I still haven’t done that, but I’m still going to be immune for a while so I’m not worried about it. I’ll get it eventually.

Best of luck to everyone else still struggling to get back to normal. It’s a good feeling! Talking to people face to face and actually being able to see their facial expressions is such a game changer in peoples general mental health. It’s amazing how we take little things like that for granted.

Not sure what it’s like everywhere else , but it’s a good time to be a Floridian (for once 😂)

Don't worry about it. Cases have risen, but hospitalisations and deaths have not. That's what matters. The media are just trying to spin things for clicks and reads (as ever). A vast majority of those cases are unvaxxed or partially vaxxed people as well.

We all have to live with the virus going forward, so cases no longer matter for communities that have been vaccinated. It's how bad you get it, not that you get it at all - and the vaccines are working exactly as they should. I've seen nothing to suggest that any variants are dodging the vaccines.

I'm in the UK, and it's the opposite in my area. Everyone I know were given Pfizer, which put me off. I would much prefer AZ.

Also, don't worry about variants. They are no more deadly or transmissible than the original strain. They are being used to scare young people.

I'd add Japan to that (handled virus incredibly well) yet large part of the population is very skeptical towards the vaccines (less than a half is positive about them).

PS
UK new infections looks scary, crossed 5k. I realize that deaths are low, but still scary.
Lockdowns are over, I presume?

Lol I'm 41, still worried
Anyway thanks for the thoughtful response though

This is my main reason for waiting on vaccination. I don’t know which is the most effective against all the strains, if boosters will be needed, and what will become the international standard. I’ll have to get one eventually though, since I’m asthmatic

Lockdown almost over. There’s a few things not fully opened yet, but I dont notice any restrictions anymore.

We were up at 80,000 infections a day in January, so I think most people don’t feel all that concerned.

The north of England is suffering the most because of the large ethnic community where those returning from India have spread the variant. Deaths continue to be incredibly low ( I believe we’re actually under yearly average for deaths overall) and hospitalisations are predominantly among people not fully vaxxed.

I‘m not worried in the slightest.

I bet we will see yearly death rates be low over the next couple of years. Covid’s propensity to kill the elderly and chronically ill has probably front loaded deaths a bit for the next 3-5 years.

I’ll go further than that if you like:

Once everybody has received a double dose of covid vaccine, the disease will functionally cease to be a threat to our global society, and will fade into the background as just another respiratory virus.

Why are you spreading lies? If they weren‘t more transmissible they would not have taken over as dominant strains. Apart from common sense, both Alpha and Delta have been scientifically proven to be more transmissible.

This is certainly a step forward in predictive value, however I feel the overall quotability has suffered 😉

They do a good job here not getting people vaccinated.

I had to get AZ for my age group, as they said its fine etc and that's just how it is. I basically stated i couldn't care less on how you think it is and i basically bailed on getting vaccinated until they offer what i want.

I am not the only one, they where expecting 100 people that day, and only 2 showed up that where also wondering if they should go through with it at that point.

I am not in any hurry.

It already is here. Most people that got here second shot basically already consider it gone. With everything opening up again life returned back to normal.

Just need to get my kids vaccinated so I can move on with my life. My sons finally started going to school and day care this week anyway. I am willing to take this small risk for their development. Being stuck at home for a year was not good for their mental health and social development. Especially in the crucial early years of their childhood.

lockdown has been over here in Texas. Wife and I are vacationing again. Anyone have any idea how long it’ll take mask on planes to go away? It’s fine for short flights but we intend to go to Europe in the next few months too, that’s a loooonnnggg flight

Coronaviruses don't mutate beyond a few 0.%. This is why they are called the "Lazy Virus" by virologists.

Think about this: If the government were so worried about the Indian variant, then why have they not halted flights from India? (There are still passenger flights to the UK every day).

Will fans be allowed at the Euro 2021 football/soccer tournament that starts in a few days? It's being played all over Europe so I guess it will vary by place. I hope so because soccer is one of those sports I can't watch without supporters in the stands.

Just order a drink that you nurse for an hour.

It could have a positive effect in the long term. Less people travelling for work can only be a good thing, as can improvements in hygiene that will probably stay with us.
That may be true, but it will be vastly outweighed by the increased loneliness and alienation from the lockdowns.

The draconian US lockdowns where you couldn't go to the movie theater for one summer 🥴
oh shut up, it was way worse than that, dont downplay it

we may look back at this thing and see that lockdowns were worse for us in the long run than covid itself. itll be interesting to see the numbers in suicides, domestic disputes, mental health issues and more. just saying "aWwWw PoOr BaBy CoUlDnT gO tO tHe ThEaTrE" is disingenuous and deflecting the point he is making, which is completely valid.

the only criticism id have for Guileless Guileless post is saying it like its a fact, he should have said "may have" or "may be", but other than that it is a valid talking point and i dont understand why you would be so dismissive of talking about it unless you dont have a valid counter point.

Japan especially puzzles me. They still want to hold the Olympics so why didn't they acquire as much vaccines as they could get a hold of? Or perhaps they did try and they just can't get any? I haven't been following it closely and I want to know what their deal is.

IIRC I heard on the news that they're not very willing to be vaccinated, don't remember the reason they gave

Hm that's weird but I'm inclined to believe it since they unnecessarily freaked out over the HPV vaccine in the past, even though it's safe.

The harms of lock downs probably don't register to you because judging by your posts, you are likely a socially inept loner who already led a "quarantine" lifestyle pre-COVID.

Hey man, he used to be 35goblins so he's paid his covid dues!

Of course they will! At least in Bavaria. We have fear porn everyday, just until 12 days or so in my city you couldn't go shopping without a negative test or double vaccine shot, but now we are allowed to see football live in the stadium. We still have to wear a mask where ever you, vaccined or not, but football will keep us happy. Talking about clown world.
